I am assuming they are checking your browser header to determine what browser you are using. If they don't reconise it they assume it is a spider (used by seach engines to find new sites).

What browser are you using?

Are you running any ad filters/blockers? They often modify the information the browsers send which could cause the site to confuse you for a spider.

My personal thoughs are that any site that pulls a stupid trick like that dosn't deserve your custom.

bevancole,

i use internet explorer..... the thing is that i use zone alarm pro and norton firewall with encryption protection schemes and other related items, such as blocking almost all types of cookie activites unless rectified by me..... as you said, you might be right that the browser is "protected" from pop-ups and java applets... ofcourse, this is also giving me headaches esp. with purchases online, esp. with staples, and amex sites..... but i think you're right.... they might try to link me to a 3rd party garbage and my browser is not letting them, and in turn, my browser is labeled as a spider.....thx for the info... any site where i can get info on this subject???

It would be norton.

Your browser normall sends out a header which each request which id the version of the browser, norton will be modifing that (probably modifing it to a noton version string). You may be able to disable this featuer in norton but keep the reast of the featuers on.
