I have, or am trying to set up a home network. I have RR internet and i want to share the conection between two computer, we wont be on at the same time though :D. Could someone tell me how to do this. I have a linksys 5 portworkgroup hub. I have tried the cable modem in the uplink position on the hub and i have laso tried it on the original ethernet card and then ran a cable from a second ethernet card to the hub to the second comp. Is there any special setup to do, i know that somebody has had to have done this before. Any help is apreciated, and bump me for a good cause, to sauve $10 a month ;)

If you have any other qustions or info you need to help just ask me and i will try to tell you what i can.

Thanks,

Josh

I believe the only way to do it without having one computer or another on is to get a cable/dsl router.

you can also put a second NIC in the machine that your cable connection is connected

Can ya give a model and brand?

A plain old hub strickly connects computers. It lets them all talk to each other. To be behind 1 internet account, you need to fool the internet to think you only have 1 computer, which a router does. You would connect this to the uplink port of your hub. Unless of course you have a hub/router combo like the netgear rt314, but I don't believe you do.

5 port workgroup hub
model # EFAH05W
I has 5 ports for computers but if you use the uplink then it only has 4 because the uplink uses the disables the plug in beside it, this stuff came in a kit from staples for $100 if that helps anyone.

that's a normal hub...your not going to be able to have two comps up at the same time if RR in your area only gives you one IP. Like what the previous members have said, you would need at least a router to fool the net into thinking X # of computers are coming from one IP. Examples include the Linksys, Netgear's and SMC's.

that's the easy way, you can always set up ICS on another comp and set it as a server (need 2 nics) but that can get rather complicated.

Look around for a netgear rt311. You can find it on sale from between 50 and 80, and it is really nice. Made out of metal, not plastic.

but that would definantly fix it, My mom doesn't want to pay 10 more amonth so she would rather pay 150 now and save in the long run.

there a few ways..:

1. buy a lynksys cable/dsl router
2. if you have a old comp laying around collecting dust...use it as a router by running linux or some other routing software..
3.buy an extra IP from RR
4.use win98SE and use the built in internet connection sharing utility(easiest/cheapest)
