I'm having a really bad day. I just got the parts for my new computer and started putting it together, something which I hate with a passion because I know that everytime something will go wrong, and I find out the cheap piece of crap SVC 120mmx25mm fan has different mounting holes than most fans so it won't work in my Antec Sonata. I have it all put together and am waiting until tomorrow to buy a different 120mmx25mm fan at an extremely inflated price from a local computer place. All the while I know something is going to be messed up when I turn it on tomorrow. On to my problem...
I took one of the two hard drives out of my old computer for my new one. In the month leading up to this new computer I had been having problems with that hard drive. It would click occasionally, act very sluggish at times, and I was having problems booting and getting through the "detecting IDE devices" portion. I RMA'd that drive and got a new (refurbished one at that) from WD for my computer. The hard drive I left in my old computer never had a problem...
The specs of my old computer are an Epox 8K7A (AMD 761 chipset) mobo, 1.2ghz Athlon T-Bird, 2x256MB Crucial PC2100, MSI GeForce2 Pro, 40GB IBM Deskstar. I also swapped sound cards from a different computer and put a Diamond MX200 in the old one. Other than that the only change to it was new IDE cables that I installed. I set it up in its new place and booted from the WinXP CD. I started the reformatting without a problem, but it hung at 0% in the reformatting process. I restarted and got an "Error, couldnt find operating system" or something like that when it was trying to boot from the WinXP CD. I then opened up the case and thought maybe the new IDE cables were faulty so I put the old ones back on. I booted up again and it hung at "detecting IDE drives" like it did before (looks like my hard drive RMA might have been worthless?). I opened it again and swapped IDE cables, this time leaving the CD burner unhooked and having only my hard drive and DVD drive in as primary and secondary masters. When I started again I didn't even get video. I tried restarting a few times but did not get a video a single time. Now I thought I was screwed and didn't know what to do, as I don't really have parts to swap out to diagnose the problem.
Then I remembered the LED that flashed codes during the POST to diagnose problems on the Epox 8K7A board. I opened up the case and tried to start it again. The POST code it always hung at for a longer then normal time was 75, then it eventually turned into 7F after about 20secs. I looked in my manual and it says that that code means there is an "SMBUS Fail." Great, the one code out of the nine that I have no idea what it means. I'm guessing this means there is something wrong with the motherboard? Is that the case? If so, it's out of warranty so I'll have to buy a new one. Any help you all can give me would be greatly appreciated.
