Need Help Bad - PC shorting out - Need to have fixed tonight

I built a computer for my girlfriend, she had been having some heat issues with it so I added another case fan last night. It started up fine after I added the fan, then I moved the computer to another outlet so I could hook up the keyboard, monitor, etc... since I've moved it everytime I hit the power button everything lights up and the fans start going and then it immediately shuts off. I had this problem when I first set up the PC and come to find out one of the metal pieces on the outside of the case was touching the inside of the ethernet plug on the Mobo. I've checked everything I could think of but it hasn't solved the problem. My girlfriend is supposed to go back to out of town tomorrow morning so I really need this fixed tonight. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Move it back to the socket it was on before -
If there is still problem,

try a different PSU - might have to transplant it from your computer.

I had the same problem [trying to improve gf gadget] once when my gf just acquired a brand new mobile phone. I managed to change the language to a language where you couldnt make head or tail of what the menu item was.........
Ended up locking up the phone and ringing the manufacturers to unlock. The woman at the helpline said it was a common occurrence, where blokes start tinkering with gadgets, then fk up. Luckily she talked me through the process. Gf didn't know anything had happened. PHEW.

Another option with the computer is to start thinking up reasons why the computer is in bits and not working like you promised her [you didn't tell her you were gonna take the computer to bits, did you? oh dear]
For instance,

................ Sorry - can't think of a good excuse at the moment, will let you know if i do.

it would be nice to know the specs. could be your psu in it is cheap, or not enough juice to power the system. this also really sounds like a standoff issue. if the psu tips dont help, remove the motherboard and see if there are any standoffs that arent lined with a screw hole on the motherboard.

While it's very easy to do, you have to get out of the locked frame of mind that there's a true cause and effect here.

Sure, examine the case fan...try removing it and getting back to where it was before you upgraded it, and see if that helps.

But beyond that, it's possible that the process of moving it put something into being that was already there, just waiting to happen.

For instance, when you put the motherboard in, is it possible that part of the board itself isn't touching the case? Forgot to put a standoff post in somewhere? Extra power cable touching something metal? Things like that.

Edit: heheh we were both typing standoff possibilities at the same time.

I tried to check out everything to make sure no live wires were touching anything metal etc. I already removed the case fan, etc to see if that was the cause to no avail. Tomorrow I plan on unplugging everything and working my way out until I can indentify the problem. Thanks for all the help.
