Well I got all the hardware installed on my comp and after booting up I ran into some more problems. I use my Win 98 SE CD to boot up and select Start Win98 Set up w/ Cd Rom support or something to that sort. Then I get the following error: Scanning PCI Bus Using Method #2. It just freezes there. I also tried using my Win 98 SE boot up floppy but it says: Disk boot error, invalid system disk. Any ideas on what to do?

So far I have installed
Processor(XP 1600), Mobo (shuttle AK31A), Maxtor HD in Primary IDE, DVD in Seconday IDE, Phillips Acoustic Edge and the floppy of course.

All help is greatly apperciated.

Also on I have a few questions on my sound card. I connected the Analog CD in from the DVD to the sound card, what do I connect the Aux in and TAD in from? Also what is S/PIDF?

ok, first is the HD plugged into the mobo's primary IDE connector, or an adapter card's .. what all do you have in ur pci slots? just the sound card? also, i think you may have a bad bootdisk, recreate another 98boot floppy ... is this a burned copy of the 98se installation disk? .. does bios detect your harddrive's correctly? .. also if you continue to have this problem, try removing the sound card, and booting ..

Just the sound card in the PCI slot. I'll try the boot disk idea in a few, waiting for other ideas. And not its not a burned copy of it. HD is properly detected and is connected to mainboard controller. Only have one monitor/keyboard. So I have unplug this one to use the otherone, which is why I am waiting to here all the suggestions first.

<< interesting, that does describe my problem but I am not using any SCSI devices..should I still do it? >>

your m/board must have an onboard ata controller which is seen by windows as a scsi device.
give it a shot as you won't lose or damage anything! 🙂

Ahh alright I see, I'll give it a try, hope it works, thanks for the help. Oh another question, is there a particular order I should install my drivers? Via 4-1, Audio, Video etc?

suggested method:
Install Windows
Install latest VIA 4in1 service pack
Install latest VIA USB filter driver
Install latest DirectX and latest patches
Install latest video drivers
Install latest sound card drivers

I think I might have a floppy problem. I tried using the method on your site but ran into some probs. Since it says my boot disk is an invalid system disk I use the CD rom to boot up. I select in the menu boot up w/ out CD rom support to get the A:\ prompt. I try to use the commands on the site but it gives me an error writing to the disk. I check to see if the floppy lock was on and it wasn't. I use the DIR command on the floppy and it shows it has fdisk and all the stuff. Any other ideas?

Arrgh damnit it still doesnt work even with the new boot disk. Here is the exact error if it helps:

Boot From ATAPI CD-Rom:
Disk Boo Failure, Invalid Sytem Disk, Press Enter.

Floppy is set to be the first boot before teh cdrom. It reads the disk it just says its invalid and thats with the boot disk created from bootdisk.com and the win98se bootdisk that I have.

can only hope that your floppy cable is on reversed in which case the floppy light at the front remains on continously.
otherwise suggest you recheck your cabling & try a different floppy drive! 😱

Well I was able to boot from my floopy and renamed the files as shown on the site. I rebooted and selected run WIn98 Setup w/ Cd Rom support and it gave me an error saying Windows 98 Setup files were not found. If I use another floppy with out the name changes I get the "Scanning PCI BUS using Mechanism #2" and it hangs there. Any ideas? Damn this is so frustrating. BTW anyone have answers to my previous questions regarding the soundcard?

when you use the startup floppy, the ram drive created uses a drive letter which temporarily bumps up your cd drives letter by one ie if your cd drive was D with the ram drive it'll be E!

if you have only 1 partition for your hdd, usually your cd drive would be D:. (2 partitions & it would be E etc)
booting with the startup disk with cd support the cd drive letter changes to E: so when you get to the A: prompt, type E: ( assuming you have only 1 partition) & hit enter.
the prompt should now change to E:> instead of A:; then with your win98 cd in the drive, type setup & hit enter.
the files should now start being copied.

arrggh I am so retarded, I read over a few guides and I forgot to run the fdisk command. I am hoping this should fix it, ona side notw how can I copy my win98 files from the CD to the HD? I forgot all my dos commands,

Alright I am stuck agian, I used FDisk to create my partions but when I try to format a drive it says invalid Media Type. What did I do wrong now?
