well my 9800 dell oem appears to be dead, it has a corrupt screen, I tried a different monitor and cable, no change, next uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, no change

on a cold start up the card works ok for a minute or two, then it goes bad, heat, the fan is working fine

next I put in a old radeon 32mb DDr card, no more curropted screen. I am on the pc now without any problem, haven't tried any games yet thou

I didn't install the drivers. the ? is what drivers do I use???????????????????? the system is windows xp home standard edition

well I don't know what to say. I pulled the heatsink/fan off the 9800 added some heat sink paste silicone under it, reseated the 9800 back in installed the drivers and it worked fine for about 10 minutes playing old UT, then she went back to it's problem

I also beefed up the cooling under it with a slot exhaust fan, didn't seem to help thou

I wonder if the card is done, or if I have a powersupply problem or a back connection in the motherboard slot thou

I put the old radeon in and installed some old drivers:6.14.10.6525, 3/22/2005, the card reads as a 7200 ?, unsure if that is correct or not.
it's the orginal radeon 32mb DDR retail card, is it really a 7200? I see the latest Catalyst 6.7 Windows XP is not for the older cards, that's why I asked the ? above

I gave the old card a run in the old orginal UT, I am surprised, It almost seems to out perform the 9800.

unsure if I will up grade or not. I would sooner have my old voodoo5 running but it will not run on this MB

my system is pent. 4 2.8G 2x400 ram

Thousands of Radeon 9700 pro /9800 have died with same symptoms already, usually after 2-3 yrs use. Mine did too, same effects. Apparently memory overheating is the cause.

thanks for the reply/info

I notice there wasn't much silicon under the heat sink and what was there was kind dried out

well it looks like I will have buy a new card, the old redeon will do for now, but after playing some games I remember why I was never in love with it, lack of load power is why, the old voodoo5 had more torque. the card seems fast untill you get close up action then it lacks guts. too bad the V5 will not run on a p4 MB

now I will have find a decent agp slot card for around 100 dollars

I used to follow graphics cards, but got burned out it all and don't now much about the newer ones
