Need help accessing my computer from another computer on campus

Hi I just recently started college and since all the computers on campus have an internet connection, I'd like to be able to back up my work onto my computer back at the dorm which is always on. I've heard you could do it with a ftp setup, but my only expereience with ftp has been downloading not uploading.

I've searched on information for windows remote access and that doesnt seem to do what I need right now. If anyone has a link to a tutorial that would show me how I can upload and download files onto my windows xp computer would be appreciated.

Just use FTP. Download and install an FTP server on your machine in your room and get a client for your mobile PC. If you can figure out how to download from it's hard to imagine you not being able to figure out how to upload. As long as your client has an explorer type interface all you do is drag and drop. The only thing even remotely challenging, and it isn't, is setting up the shared folders and user accounts on the server side. WarFTP used to be a free server. Serv-U is good as well. If you have trouble, that's what the help files were created for.

Well the problem is that I don't have a mobile pc and we're not allowed to install software onto the school computers, I'll mess around with it for a bit, but it sounds like both sides will need the client to work.

not only do you only need the client on one side (assuming you only want to move files from the school PC to yoru dorm PC) but you can use ftp in dos if your worried about installing software on the school's pc. A bit archaic to be sure but completely functional.

Just download and install Guild FTP. It's very simple to set up. Just use internet explorer to get into your ftp.

thats very inconvenient. mail sites have their limits and its a pain to have to check your mail all
the time. you could use something like briefcase.yahoo.com

but the best would be ftp or network share. what os r u using?

Agreed. Use this format in Internet Explorer to access your FTP server:

ftp://User😛assword@IP😛ort

Just type that in to the address bar and you're in business. It's not the most reliable FTP client, but it will work for what you want it to do.

Apparently typing the : symbol following by a p results in a smiley. 😛 Whoops!

assuming windows machines why not just use their file sharing capabilities.

might not work depending on your schools network but it might.

how to do it depends on yoru machine OS.

but then you could map a drive to yoru machine(and have it be the y: drive) and just do a save as y:\file.

thats probably easier than ftping.
