Need help accessing hard drive

I had a computer that was in an endless loop when trying to boot. I decided to upgrade the hard ware and build another computer. The problem is that i cannot access the files on the old hard drive from the computer in the endless boot. I put that hard drive in another computer and it appears to work fine. I can access the files but for some reason the my documents folder says 0 bytes. I know there are files in the my documents folder. How do I get to them? Thanks!!!
