Ok I just installed winME on my system (see sig if the configuration matters) and whenever I try to shut it down, the "blue screen of death" pops up and says:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted.
now ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, so the only way to restart it is by hitting the reset button on my computer. Afterwards, the computer shuts down fine.
BTW, when the error is displayed, my floppy drive light comes on, so maybe its looking for a floppy. Also, right before it shuts down, it usually gives me a blue screen (Norton) and says "scanning boot record" (you know, the whole antivirus thing). Now it doesn't do that.
WHAT IS GOING ON??????

PLEASE HELP ME!!!! :(

Mine does that exact thing, typically only after several games have been played for more than a couple of hours. This an Asus A7V w/ duron 650@766. It only started this after I stuck a Geforce MX in it. It's annoying. Hoping a driver realease will fix this. ANyone with a solution? I tried a patch for shutdown bluescreens for ATA100 systems, but it didnt fix this.

I havent noticed the floppy doing so (and my floppy sounds like a freight train) but I will check the light next time. I've been trying to narrow down which apps cause this and so fay all I can say is that any long run of a 3d application will cause this. I'm just waiting for it to smoke a system file so I have enough reason to really gripe.....

SYSTEM:
Asus A7V
Duron 650@766
Asus V7100 Pure 32mb
128 mb Siemens PC100
Guillemot Fortissimo
Advansys SCSI card
Creative Flash56 modem
2 scsi cdroms and 1 ide cdrom
IBM 17gb 5200 rpm piece of crap HDD
250w powers supply (smoked a 300 after 2 weeks of running fne, wazup with that?)

Quick Solution:

1. Use a MSDOS Boot Disk
2. Run FDISK
3. After removal of Windows 9.x/ME/3.1/DOS...

Install Linux, and your problem is solved!

Hope that helps! ;)

If you have norton version 5 it may have problems with ME. You can try disabling the norton antivirus(2000 version) by going into autoprotect-advanced-disable floppy check at shutdown.

ok this used to happen to me on my tbird. it was overclocked. the problem was that after i raised the voltage .05 more, it began to work fine. It was 700@900 at default voltage. i moved it up one and it began to work fine. mines a slot a if that helps, but that worked for me, try it see what it does.

the reason: winme needs to be more stable than 98 or 2k, just the way it was made (thank microsoft)

I read somewhere that Norton software can do this. I used to get the same problem when I used Norton Uninstaller Delux. Uninstall ya Norton Software and see if it still happens. I'm sure this is your problem. If you look on MS website you will more than likely find reference to the Norton problems on some systems.

If you are running detonator 6.18 try installing 6.31. This will solve the problem.

Windows ME has a known compatibility problem with newer Nvidia drivers on shutdown. Install older drivers or wait a while for new ones to come. And contrary to what someone posted, 6.31 does not fix it (for me, and many others on other boards). Check out the reactor critical board for some lengthy threads on the matter.

Well, maverick, 6.31 fixed it for me (this is actually mentioned on geforcefaq.com). So, I'd think twice before dissing others...

toomuchcoffee: i didn't say it'll help. It might, since it helped a lot of folks out there. Helped me and my roommate.

Here's a link for those of you who think I'm pulling this outa my a$$:

G14 could you post that link again? it doesn't work for me...did you cut the end off?

I thought the micron fix only addressed the faster (over 900) processor problem, but if they also fixed this problem i want to try it.

Argo, I read the faq regularly. I was just saying that it doesn't seem to say that 6.31's fix this particular problem. They do address this problem in one section, and recommend a reg fix that doesnt work for me and others.
