Whenever I try to run the installer for VIA 4-in-1 4.43 in 98 SE, its telling me REGISTRY ERROR. PLEASE REBOOT

how do I fix it?

I'm trying to have a 98 SE system recognize my new Abit KG7-RAID. I'd rather NOT do a fresh install and try to just mate it together. This isn't my HD and the person who uses the computer stores their stuff everywhere and makes it a PITA to backup properly.

That sounds like no fun! Hmm, try this:

  • Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, and go to the Device Manager tab
  • Go down the list of devices, expand Hard disk controllers, right-click the master IDE controller and click Remove. Don't let it reboot.
  • Do likewise for the stuff under System Devices there, uninstall all of it and keep not letting it reboot.
  • Now make sure you have a fairly large hammer nearby in case you need one :) and reboot the system. Win98SE will rediscover stuff and hopefully you can then install the 4-in-1's.

DISCLAIMER: I make no guarantee what will or won't happen. This is just an educated guess.

The problem is I can only boot in safe mode, otherwise its asking me for a bunch of device drivers that I can't intsall manually or I can't find the location of the VIA drivers.

don't run the installer..extract the files with WinZip or whatever you use to a folder , then go to device manager and update the drivers for the individual devices. When 98se askes for the drivers just point it to the folder that you extracted the drivers to...

or use the driver pack found here

where you having a registry problem with SE before you changed the mobo ? ?

You should still have access to Device Manager in Safe Mode, if you want to try it.

Ok thanks everyone!

Turns out that I just had to let Win98SE pick whatever crap drivers it needed for the new devices (I just let it search automatically) and it loaded a bunch of stuff circa 4/99 - apparently its working.

The 4-in-1 installer would work only after everything was detected and installed (using either old drivers or whatever Win98SE felt like using)

Its not my choice OS, I'd rather use XP Pro SP-1 but its for my dad and I don't feel like re-installing all of his crap. He stashes his docs and stuff all over the HD... ugh.

Thanks again everyone!
