Hi guys,

After trying everything I could, I'm posting about my graphics card in this forum. The damn thing is still not working. I'm completely lost what to do!!

The problem started 1 month after I bought my card. The problem was that sometimes my graphics card would simply stop giving display and the card fan would start running at full speed, making a loud noise. At that time, I concluded that the graphics card was defective.

I sent the graphics card (4870), motherboard and the old 8600gt to the resp. service centers. To my surprise, all came back saying that they were working absolutely fine!! Exactly on the same day, my Corsair VX450 died! So, obviously I concluded this was the root of all problems and promptly sent that for RMA. Those guys also confirmed that it had died and gave me a brand new seal packed unit, which I collected last Saturday.

So now I thought all my problems are solved and reconnected the 4870 with the new VX450 and everything was workin fine..... for 1 day!! Then the same problem.

I even got a servicing guy to come upto my place and find out whats wrong. He just looked at my mobo, cpu and graphics card combo and said that its a very unbalanced config and that is causing the problem. I know its unbalanced (I'm between upgrades), but shouldnt it work still?

Now I have unplugged the 4870 and am using my old trusty 8600GT. Its working fine. But what am I to do with the 4870?? It just doesnt work on my system. The RMA people say its working fine in their place. Now it is just nicely packed and sitting on my table!! Its been more than 2 months since I bought the card and till now I've played maybe 1-2 weeks with it.

my config: Core 2 Duo E4300, DG965RY, 3GB DDR2, Powercolor 4870, Seagate 250GB, LiteOn DVD Reader, Sony DVD Writer, Corsair VX450, Coolermaster Elite 330, Dell S2209W, XFX 8600GT

yea thats the problem. None of my friends are gamers, and their systems are even more outdated than mine.

Just a thought; make sure you hooked up your power supply video card connector to the 4870. Its a common error for those just familiar with older systems.

I checked and the Corsair VX450 is not on the ATI certified list of power supplies for even single cards. Perhaps the PSU not being powerful enough is the problem. It would explain the previous power supply dying because it was being severely taxed. It would also explain the fact that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and seems to work less over time.

Try uninstalling all nVidia graphics drivers, run CCleaner to purge the files that the uninstall can't get to, shut down computer, remove 8600, insert 4870, boot, install ATi drivers.

What operating system? If you're trying to run both cards at the same (for PhysX or whatever) you can run into some major hassles. They can be worked around for the most part, but you have to look at your specific scenario.

i would imagine that that 450 watter barely makes the power required to power the card. Check the amps required, I'm sure that the 4870 just needs more juice than your psu can provide along with everything else going in your rig.
