NEED HELP! 4850 x2 should i get one?

Hi,

I know the 4850x2 is only a few FPS behind the 4870x2 in most cases and at its low price i was almost about to punch my bank details in and order, then... I decided to look at some more reviews before i purchased and i read in forums that the 4890 although allot slower than the 4850x2, the 4890 is allot more stable. Apparently some games like fallout 3 and gta iv react badly to these x2 ATI cards and you should buy a single gpu card... I came here looking for opinions on what i should buy. I have a choice between the 4890, the 4870 or the 4850 x2

Mys other specs are:

AMD phenom II x4 955 3.2 @ 4ghz
4gb ram ddr2
asus m4n78
800w psu
1680 x 1050 (always)

I would like to buy the 4850x2 but i am worried about the driver support and that in some games (like fallout 3) only one core will be used (due to driver issues)

Should i just go for the 4850x2 or should i keep to single GPU cards?

Unless you really need a video controller now, I would wait the 45-60 days to see what starts shaking out in the DirectX 11 field.

At 1680X1050 you'd be better off going with the 4890. The X2's are better suited for higher resolutions 1920X1200 and above.

And as you mentioned, with a single card you won't run into issues where the game hasn't been added to the crossfire support list yet.

as tdoran1 mentioned, i would wait on the new DX11 cards before putting down more than $100 on a gpu right now. you can usually find HD4850s on sale right now for $90, dropping down to $75 with mail in rebates (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150337 for the XFX model). this should be more than enough power to hold you for next gen @ 1680x1050 (should be similar to my 9800GTX 512mb 65nm), though it still leaves room to be desired for extra performance in a few games. given the expected doubling in performance vs current cards in pretty much every rumor about ATI and nvidia, as well as rumored larrabee performance, i honestly, from an enthusiast standpoint as well as a salesman, cannot recommend buying a high end card now, unless you have cash to burn. the only alternative i can recommend is if you have inside info on when nvidia's releasing their hardware, to get an EVGA card and plan your 90 day step up accordingly based on the release date of GT300

Wait for DX 11 cards--or wait for them anyway in hopes prices of DX10 cards come down!

Another in the wait category. It is too late in this cycle to pay for high end cards imho. The value is only a couple months away from dropping out of them. Might as well buy then to maximize your cost to length of use ratio. DX11 is coming and AMD should have something come Sept/Oct. Save up and go high end then.
