Trying to read some of the larger newsgroups through comcast, which contracts out their newsgroups to (I think) giganews. They have retention in some of the larger binary groups out to six months.

I've been using Xnews 32-bit for windows, seems like a decent binary newsgroup reader program, but when attempting to download headers from some of the bigger groups, I get out of memory errors. I think that the app is hitting the 32-bit 2GB VM limit in windows.

Is there a solution? Do I need to move to 64-bit windows? Are there any good 64-bit newsgroup reader programs? I doubt that there is a 64-bit port of Xnews, it was written in Delphi and I don't know if it's being updated at all.

whow...newsgroups ("usenet") are so old..they were around when people still had 8bits machines.

I dont think it's necessary to have a 64bit client and OS just to access newsgroups...wish i could help, but certainly must be your newsreader.

Newsbin actually does have a native 64-bit client in beta testing for registered users. It's the only one I'm aware of.

I agree with flexy. Have you tried Grabit? It's free, and works pretty well.

I generally use Forte's Agent usenet reader.
Go into the settings and put a limit on the number of headers to grab.
Start with maybe 300,000 headers.
Large binary files can quickly consume large numbers of headers.
Should work fine (assuming that the hard drive was formatted using NTFS).
Note that: after downloading new headers, you need to "Compact Databases".
