Need headphone advice.

depends on what you want really... some swear by rs-1/2s while others are happy with senn 580/600/650. do u have an amp? how much budget are we talking? i personally crave senn sound plus grados hurt most peoples ears for prolonged use. senn 580/600/650 = the most comfortable (yeah i think they are more comfortable than dt880s and cd3000s)

never heard of grados, but i'm probably clueless. i'd go for the senns just for the name and reputation

i'd say get the 280's as well, thats a good price. they are completely different cans. the 280s are sealed and keep the sound in realy, realy well and sound awsome while doing it. they also feel way better than the grados. the grados are an open can and sound great but everybody around you can hear them and they are uncomfortable to me, but if they work for you cool.

No amp but it plugs into a HT receiver using the gold adapter. Can you tell me more about the 580/600/650s? I don't know anything about them really. Budget is around $60. Thanks.

With your budget... you can't afford the 580s on up 😛

get the 280s. As mentioned they are sealed, but they sound great.

After an ample amount of break in!! <--- I cannot stress this enough, the sound from these cans get much warmer and more robust after a few days of non stop break in. When I first got them they sounded a little tinny, but after I searched the net I found out the 280s really begin to shine after some heavy break in.

Are the cans for home usage only? Your receiver should be a decent amp...personally, I'd just upgrade to the 80s. The 280s are a good set on their own, but the Grados are famous for a reason. at that price, it's hard to beat.

I listened to all of the Grado line, and most of the Sennheiser line, as well as a Beyer DT990.
The Grados overall sounded the best to me starting with the SR90 and going up. They had a warmer sound. The sennheisers were nice, but didnt fit my taste. The Beyers were in the middle, but closer to what I liked in the Grados.

The Beyers are much more comfortable than the Gardos, but costed a little more than I could afford...

I ended up with teh SR125 Grado and have no regrets (couldnt dish enough out for SR325s).

If you dont want to spend so much check out Koss PortaPros. These are definately underhyped and offer very good sound esp for the 40$ pricetag (cheaper on amazon.com). They also have a lifetime warantee. I use these when I on my daily commute and they are excellent.

Bottom line: Go to an audiophile shop and listen - you will need at least an hour depending on their selection. When you cant hear enough difference for the added price, you have found your model 😀

If you are tight on your wallet, check out the Koss Portapros.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Hey thanks 🙂. Any luck on where I can find an audiophile shop? As for my porta-cans I use the Koss KSC-35s which I love.

i have owned grados for years, and loved everymodel i owned. i started with the 60's when i went to college - used em both on the stereo and w/ the pc, had to send em in for service at one point (by the way, awesome customer support - really a great thing when the founder of the company and head researcher takes time to email you about your problem w/ the cans) anyways, i decided to do the upgrade to the 80's. best $25 or 30 i've ever spent. they were even better imaging and much nicer on the bottom and top end. needless to say, i loved em even more. a few years later, roommate was borrowing my 80s and got his car broken into, lost my cans as well as alot of his stuff, so he decided to be nice and bought me a pair of 125's. all i can say is wow, these things are absolutely amazing.
i have never owned a pair of senns, so i can't comment on super long term useage, but from what i've listened on friends, i haven't been overly impressed w/ any that i've heard that weren't outrageously priced. then again, now, i'd take my 125s over almost any price senns.
short side of the story, if you like your grados, then stick with them, you won't be dissappointed. the jump to the 80s is worth it in my opinion, and if u can splurge the 20, do it! the customer service, if nothing else has me a grado customer for life.
as previously stated though, if you're that wavering, go into a good audiophile shop and listen on both of them for awhile, most places won't mind you just sitting and trying to determine your choice (hell, i sat in a shop one day auditioning speakers for almost 8 hours and nary a complaint or rude staffer) so go listen and enjoy!

this kinda stuf you buy online. head-fi.org forums for some info. amazon.com carries some like the sennheisers etc. i'm sure others know more, i got my senns hd497 from amazon.com

ah, i've never seen one like that. maybe the goodguys, but their selection was rather lousy when is aw it there.

🙁 that sucks...i just want to try out some good headphones...the only decent ones i've had/tried are the sr-60s that i think i'm about to upgrade to the 80s

The sennheiser hd280 will sound completely different than Grado sr60/80. First HD280 is a closed phone, it in created for as monitor so the sound coming out is very cold and analytical. Where on the Grados will be very forward sounding, which is especially nice for rock music. If you are used to listening to Grado headphones, I doubt the hd280 will be suitable for you.
But since you are using a HT receiver as your output, which tends to have high impedence output, may be you will get lucky an match well with a pair of sennheiser HD580.

Another recommendation I can give is the Beyer DT770, you should be able to find them used in the $120 range. They will sound well out of a receiver headphone out
