One of the administrators here at work forgot the Administrator passwords for a Windows 2000 web-server he just setup. He doesn't want to reformat. Any ideas?

Thanks

Well, if there is another account on there with Admin rights he can always just login as the other user (himself for instance) and change the password. But I have a feeling he's thought of that and that's not the case. :)

I do have something around here somewhere that will do it, let me see if I can dig it up. It's just a Linux boot disk that allows you to write to the registry to reset the admin password.

Yep, the only account on the machine is the administrator. He's basically locked out.

2 things you can do - get Locksmith from Winternals and change/get the password, or boot to a floppy with NTFSDOS and pull the SAM Database and Crack it with l0pht Crack.

I have used the Pull the SAM and crack it method a few times, and it works really well, but you need a machine with a fast CPU to crack through the SAM.

Translation: My roommate went home for summer vacation and left his PC here. He's got it locked up tighter than a drum and I want to look at his porno...I mean surf...I mean......

JK...couldn't resist. Seriously, I hope it all works out for you. That's why I have admin rights for all the NT boxes in my office...sometimes the little post-it note that these folks write their passwords on gets lost or gets thrown away (think about that for a sec....so much for network security, huh?) Good luck. :)
