I'm currently running...

Gigabyte P35-DS3L
E8400 3.0ghz 775
4gb DDR2800 (2x2048)
1TB WD Black SATA HD
EVGA 8600GT 512mb

I want to upgrade to a ATi 5770 or something Nvidia in its range...

Will my board support these cards? Whats the best choice for my system?

Thanks!

Yeah, a budget would help.

Got $200? Get 5770 or 4890. Got $300? Get a 5850. Got $400? Get a 5870 (if you have a decent PSU).

For some gaming, L4D2 at the moment.

i'd like to stick around 150$, i need to get a bigger PSU while im at it, only have a 430w thermaltake.

GTX 260.

I just went from an 8600gt to a gtx 295 and the difference is noticeable sometimes.

If you get a 5750 you can keep your current PSU, and if you upgrade to another setup in the future you can get a 2nd 5750 for crossfire, which seems to be around 5850 speed, a little better if you get a model that overclocks well.

EDIT : A 5750 is one holy shit-ton faster than an 8600GT btw, so as long as you're playing at 1680x1050 or below, you'll be golden.

is that the thermaltake 430 watt that has just 18amps on the 12v? if so it will be borderline because that psu doesnt really even make the 18 amps that its rated for. there was a review of that psu and it only made 16 amps when tested. it would probably work but 16 amps is very low and if you were to oc that cpu and video card it would be right at that limit.

really that psu is very misleading because even many cheap 300watt oem psus make more 12v amps than that.

Well sounds like i'll go with a 5750/5770 and upgrade to an Antec 500w+.

Antec is truly a step up! If you've got the extra $, you might consider getting a higher-end Antec right now (if you plan on rebuilding your PC or adding GPU power in the next couple of years). Something like a 550/600/750 depending. Of course the Antec 500 (Greenpower/NeoHE/etc).

DX11 is no big deal on an entry level card like the 5750. Another card in the same price range which would also offer the same performance boost (3-4x) over your 8600GT is the 250GT. Those have been spotted for $40-$110 AR, leaving you some cash for a much needed PSU upgrade. You should be able to power one of the low power 9800GTs off your current PSU if you decide to go cheap. Still a 2-2.5x performance gain. Just don't get a 240GT, those really are crap.

I have that TR-430 in a box in my closet. Worked fine for a much older Athlon machine it was designed for, not so much for anything new.

eh, no DX11.

Well, hes not going to be able to take advantage of quality dx 11 features with a 5770. In Dirt 2 the 5870 barely can take advantage of tesselation.. sooo unless he wants to play at minimum resolution so that the water has more ripples and the cloth seems more realistic then its really a moot point.

A GTS 250 will bring you performance improvement, but the HD 5750 is slighly faster, consumes less power and is more advanced, an HD 5770 is even better yet, but definitively you need a new PSU in the long road.
