Syborg,
I'd be more than happy to offer any input I could possibly give you, as I have quite a bit of experience. For that price, one of the absolute best pairs of speakers you could get is a pair of DIY's (Do it yourselfs) which I recently built, check them out
here. They have tons of reviews on there as well. One of the people who built them, liked them so much he sold his $2,500
NHT 2.9's and paired them up with a sub, which he actually liked better!
Please, whatever you do, DO NOT buy a pair of Bose speakers. They are probably some of the worst speakers on the market, I don't recommend them for anyone. Paper cones, bad construction, no accuracy. As they say, no highs no lows, must be Bose!
One brand I'd recommend you taking a listen to, if you haven't done so yet, is
NHT. They make some of the most accurate speakers for the price, pretty uncompromising. Take a look at their
Super One's and make sure to pick up some
Speaker stands as they WILL increase the quality of your sound with bookshelf sized speakers.
If you don't have an NHT dealer in your area, I would also definitely look into some
Paradigm's. Some of the Paradigm models I can recommend are
Titans which are an EXCELLENT bookshelf speaker for about $220 a pair, and once you add in some
Speaker stands (which again, will improve the sound quality a LOT, trust me) you'll be close to your budget.
Off the top of my head these are the two I highly recommend and I'd say you should listen to both before making a decision, if you can. Personal speaker choice is very subjective, but for the money, it's hard to beat those two pairs of speakers.
