Need good Sennheiser headphones

I have some open ear Senns that have pretty decent sound, but the wiring is ripped on the left earphone.

Can someone recommend some good Sennheisers? I was thinking HD-280 or maybe some of the HD-500 "audiophile" series.

I think you need an amp to get the most out of the higher end Sennheisers (I'm not sure which models though).

I have the 280s and like them a lot.

Are you looking for open or closed?

Here's a couple recent headphone threads (some info might apply)

Must they be Senns? The 280s are good, but for around the same price I really like the Grado SR-80s. Start reading a little before buying: http://www.head-fi.org/, http://www.headphone.com/.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you are looking at the 500 series, the 580s and 590s and such are spectacular headphones. They are expensive, though, and as the previous poster said, amplification is more of an issue compared to lower impedance phones, such as the Grados (if you're looking to save yourself the extra $50 or so for an amp).
