Hopefully this is the right forum for this... hehe

Tomorrow I will be visiting a school to speak to a group of parents and students in a beginning engineering course about computer building, and more specifically, "overclocking". They will probably have little to no knowledge of overclocking so I was hoping some of you here could help me come up with analogies that could help explain the concept. I could use any ideas and help, so I won't end up droning on to the students with complex terms and actually make my speech interesting.

One example I remember was someone here comparing RAM bandwidth to the amount of highway lanes and traffic.

Or overclocking is like turboing a car... etc etc.

Come on overclocking gurus, help brainstorm! LOL. English class meets overclocking!

Thanks in advance! :D

Overclocking a comp is like takin roids. You get beefed up temporarily but in the long run the results can be quite...small.

...a beginning engineering course about computer building, and more specifically, "overclocking".

WTF would they want to know about that? Is it just to get a better idea of how the whole thing works?

An analogy? It's like over boring your car's engine. A lot of time, money and effort for not much return, but you'll learn a lot about the engine in the process.

Overclocking isn't that hands on...

Comparing a $30,000 car to a $300.00 PC would equate to the same "hands on" ratio. Overall (time, sanity, and moneywise), it's more frugal to buy the bigger engine or CPU in the first place.

its like a whole lot of wasted effort for minimum noticeable benefit.

Hm... all the effort I put into it was going into my BIOS and increasing my FSB. Lots of work there.

i was referring more to buying exotic cooling systems, massive psu's etc,"performance" memory and the like.

Let's just neglect mentioning the expensive third party fan(s), which are probably noisy to boot. Or, the time spent tracking down issues, or in the case of the wondrous troubleshooting abilities of most of our members, reformatting everything, only to discover the cause is due to overclocking.

Building and overclocking a PC is a lot like building your own Lego set/model/whatever.

Building a PC: There are an almost unlimited number of ways you could arrange your bricks/computer parts. Should I go for the Red brick(ATI) or the green brick(Nvidia) at this spot? Should I put a cool brick here (joystick) or a crazy brick there (Linux) and still make it turn out good?
As with Legos, though, there are only so many ways you can put together the bricks. You can't put a 2x4 brick on another upside down and expect them to stay together (inserting agp card into pci-e). Mega Blocks(macintosh) and legos (windows) don't always play nicely with each other. They just don't fit right together. You could go on and on and on with this.

Overclocking a PC: Is like turning Lego bricks into Lego Technic pieces, or maybe a small battery powered motor. You suddenly can do things you couldn't do with the regular pieces(speed things up, make things more efficient) in a very unnatural way. Wheels turn faster, etc.

Hope that helps...

Thanks to those who provided good ideas.. Will definitely use some of them today.. As for those talking about pedophiles.... have fun :D
