I need your help guys, I need one of those inexpensive home theater things for my Mom. I've finally convinced her she needs a DVD player as well as decent speakers. Been looking at those "DVD Home Theater Systems in a box". Sony makes what seems to be a nice one for $379 (Ultimate Electronics) that includes 5 speakers and a subwolfer, a 5 disk DVD player, AM/FM tuner, etc.

Are these a good deal, or is there something else better out there?

I personally haven't bought any of this stuff in a long time, so I wouldn't know. I need some advice here from those who have shopped for this stuff more recently than 1994 (the last time I bought home theater equipment).

Thanks,

Hopper

BTW, she already has a nice Sony 36" TV (it is 3 years old), Dish Network for TV source, and a nice VCR. She just needs a DVD player, extenal speakers, and no more than $500 or so as a total cost.

I'd go for the HTIAB (HT in a Box) - your mom isn't likely going to be wanting spinemelting bass or perfect aural accuracy as much as adequacy combined with a low bottom line. The Sony ones seem pretty good - I'm heading out tomorrow so I'll stop by an electronics store and see if I can demo a few. :)

LOL! You guys posted at the same time! ;)

BTW, we looked at the BOSE system together yesterday. Ok, so it is nice... But for the price, bleah!

Too much money for what you get. Might as well buy a true component system for that much cash.

LOL!!!

My Mom doesn't come in my room anymore, and as for bugging me to clean it... I think that's Thumper's job now. :D

Hey, at least I got hampers (she insisted), so my clothes are tossed in plastic hampers instead of on the floor. :D

But yes, Mom's like Sony stuff, they make good stuff after all. She got a great deal on the TV. It was a floor model, got it for $500. 36" Sony Trinitron, only a year old, good deal! ;)

BOSE is the first thing we looked at, she has one of their Wave Radios and loves it.

But $2,000 for a Home Theater Sysetm? Forget it...

I typed up that sig myself, just my current thoughts on America and our current place in the world.

Take her to listen to some and see what she likes. My dad wound up getting a kenwood (exact system number eludes me) and it sounds really nice.

Bo$e is definately a "love it or leave it" kind of thing. And they are overpriced.
Mind if I quote you?

We did listen to them in the store, but in that big place you can't really tell what they will sound like at home.

She liked the Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung units, but is leaning towards the Sony because she likes Sony, and because the speakers are a better size for her room.

We haven't been to Best Buy or any other stores, just Ultimate Electronics... Like I said, I haven't personally been shopping for this stuff for 9 years, so I'm a bit out of date myself...

This is the absolute best for the money hands down. Onkyo and can be had for as low as $450 if you shop around. Circuit City has it listed at $499 but read the review there compared to other reviews on other systems at circuit city. I shopped around and eventually bought this system. Great quality and sound. Blows the sony's and any thing else in this price range out of the water. Go listen to it at your local electronics store, you will see. It is also pretty small, but not as small as some of the micro systems, but the sound clarity and quality is so much better. You do need a dvd player which is the only draw back, but you can get a good one for less than $110. It is a little more than some of these others, but it is more than worth the price. You will have no regrets!

It's for Grasshopper's mom. Stay within the parameters. I still say SONY , cause it's familiar and the speakers are the right size for here room. Price / performance / features are all there.

Yea, those systems are nice, maybe I'll get one for me when I have some money,

For my Mom, I think they are overkill. :)

the onkyo is by far the best budget HT in a box system. if they had stuff like that years ago when i got mine i wouldn't be replacing it right now. ah well. off to start a thread about HT :D
