need glasses, have Q's

ok, so first I need to get some sort of prescription I guess. all I know is my sight at far distance is pretty bad. is there first a place I need to go to measure how bad my eyes are? what's a place like that called?

then I need to get some glasses. how do you go about picking frames? can you go into a place and try pair after pair of frames with flat (straight through, non-correcting) lenses and look at yourself in a mirror?

what are some good chains to look at that do this sort of stuff? all I know is lenscrafters, and from what I hear, they just mass process people in the most profitable and careless way possible.
and what are the generic names of the places I'll have to go, so I can look in the phonebook for quality local shops

You'll need to call an Optometrist and make an appointment.

You can then try on glasses at their office once they have tested your eyes to see what you need

as for the prescription, go to any place that sells eye glasses( well, most places can do a check up)

If you have insurance, find out where you can go to get a lower price or something

as far as the frames, just whatever you like

Did you just emerge from the Pygmy Jungles of Austrialia or something?

Have you never hear of "The Eye Doctor" aka "an Optometrist?"

How old are you? Chances are, your vision has been bad since birth. You've NEVER had an eye exam? Did you get your shots as a child?

For deciding where to go, I keep it simple and go to wal mart and buy one of their "better" glasses

we used to go to lenscrafters and some others, but their prices are marked up and even with insurance bringing them down, i've found it simppler to go to wal mart, at least the one I go to has a very nice staff. One thing you can do though is if your insurnace gives a nice rate for a certain shop, buy the frame from there. Most small shops charge a CRAP LOAD for the lenses and any coating you want even with insurance, wal mart doesn't and honestly, with 3 of us wearing glasses (dad, me, younger brother) we haven't noticed any difference in quality of lenses from other places.

You need to go to an optometerist to get an eye exam. Open up the directory, and it will list 100s. Probably cross referenced in the Opticians section.

You can go in and try out as many pairs as you want, till you are satisfied.

Go to lenscrafters, they do it all, and they have pretty good frames.

Edit: their frames arent too expensive either, they had a promo for lens and frame for like $100, plus they do it all in under an hour!

Also....you can make a big mistake by going and picking something "off the shelf" at the drug store, etc.

They can actually hurt your eyes....go to a DOCTOR (Optometrist)

funny..i just bought some new glasses at lenscrafters today. i told the guy, i have $300 to spend..i want glasses in 1.5 hours. i cracked my 3 year old glasses and had to get some new ones real quick before my trip this week.

i think my prescription is too strong too. getting a headache surfing the internet.

Lens Crafter aint half as bad as people say, yes its relatively expensive, but its one hour, and quality is decent.
