I have a P4 2.4Ghz Prescott @ 400FSB with 2 GB of RAM runnning subject software in addition to other graphic and web design programs.

I always get out of memory errors (IM USING ONBOARD GFX). I'm thinking I need a dedicated GFX card. Would a 6600GT or x600 do the job? Or is there other types of cards I should get for said programs? This workstation will not be used for gaming.

AGP8X cards please. TIA

Thanks. Then what about a 6200 or x300?

BTW: We are having about 5-6 of said programs open at one time, so I'm hoping a dedicated card would remedy the "out of memory error" despite the 2GB of RAM installed/

Firstly make sure in your bios you have got more then 32mb of onboard ram set to do the graphics. Make sure it is set it at the maximum.

Secondly a regular graphics card could help . . . but not as much as you might want when using programs like photoshop.
You want to look for a graphics card designed for professional imaging programs

http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_geforce.html

This explains the difference bewteen a geforce and a quadro there is a lot memory optimizations. I am reading it myself as I type this and am looking at the "quad buffed stereo" stuff myself.

I myself do a small amount of graphics work in PSP 9 not too much but I am running a 6600gt 128mb version and it just doesn't cut it.
I cant really work with images larger then say 3000x3000x300dpi

I get continual memory problems and the program can sometimes just crash on its own.
I cannot run Dreamweaver at the same time as I am running PSP.

A 6600gt benchmarks between a quadro FX 700 and a FX 500 when using SPECviewperf® 8.1 which is the standard for workstation graphics cards

My suggestion would be to get a Quadro FX 1100 or a Quadro FX 700 for your requirements the FX 1100 would be perfect
