Need free 'fixes', patches and updates that are compatible for Windows 98 SE

Hi

I own a small tower computer which has Windows 98SE installed which I want to sell online, with the genuine installation disc and product key, keyboard, monitor, mouse, some software, and two Windows 98 books, to a person who wants to learn about Windows & modern computing. But, if I cannot sell it I will be giving it away free!

So, far I have successfully installed free, legal and legitimate updated drivers for the 2 Intel chips of the motherboard (Intel Whitney CR System Motherboard) as well as installing the correct INF file and driver for the monitor (Compaq S510).

Also I did find Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable x86 and Net FX 20 SP2 x86. But they both did not successfully install!

So, I need free 'fixes', patches and updates that are compatible for Windows 98 SE and that are malware free, available from trusted websites - would welcome links or suggestions!

Also, I am looking for free programs that are compatible for Windows 98 SE, for example like an uninstaller similar to Revo Uninstaller and an unlock and delete program similar to IOBit Unlocker.

Have already installed the last free, legal and legitimate version of Windows Media Player, 6.4, which is compatible for Windows 98SE together with free legal and legitimate codecs, as well as mplayer2 v6.4.07.1112, Media Player Classic v6.4.9.1 and Windows Media Player v9.00.00.2980!

Also I have installed another free, legal & legitimate media player, which is compatible for Windows 98 SE: Video LAN VLC Media Player v0.8.6i.

I have not had a 'trial run' of each player, yet. But if none of these players function after 'doing trial run' then I will have to find another 2 free, legal and legitimate players that are. Again I would welcome any links or suggestions!

Am also looking for free, legal and legitimate adware, malware and spyware standalone scanners or all-in-one scanners that are compatible for Windows 98SE with updates, if possible.

Also, have already installed one firewall that is compatible for Windows 98SE as well as including another two on the small tower computer.

But the reason why I am looking for these types of scanners and why I have installed 1 firewall and included another 2 is because I am thinking ahead - if the person that I give or sell the computer to decides to 'surf' internet using Windows 98 SE (not advisable) then they will need to check and protect their computer - again I would welcome any links or suggestions!

Have also installed the following programs, which are compatible for Windows 98 SE - apologise if you think that this is unnecessary:

XN View v1.74 - multi-format image viewer; V Cleaner (Virus Cleaner) v0.996 - a virus removing utility from Grisoft - need updates; Tweak UI; Smart Buster v0.97 - small utility program; Simple File Shredder v3; Shell Search v2 - quickly and easily finds shortcuts, favorites, and other types of files and folders in Windows' most commonly used shell folders and optionally their subfolders; Registry Prot by Diamond Computer Systems Pty. Limited - 100% free, standalone compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector; Photo Filtre v6.0.2; My Uninstaller v1.33; Img Burn v2.5.8.0; and Iconoid v3.8.5 - small program that helps reduce the clutter and confusion of the Windows desktop by automatically hiding and displaying desktop icons and by removing the colored box behind icon text.

All, or most, of the above programs will be burnt onto a disc and will be given to the person who buys, or gets for for free, the small tower Windows 98 SE installed computer!

Have also visited Filehippo, Nonags, OldApps and Sourceforge. But although did not find any free, legal & legitimate fixes, patches and updates for Windows 98 SE when visiting Filehippo, Nonags and Sourceforge I will be contacing OldApps, hopefully by e-mail, because I do know that they offer old files and programs for free - again would welcome any links or suggestions again!

I will now end this message. But, before doing so I need to explain why I am searching for free, legal & legitimate fixes, patches and updates for Windows 98 SE installed computer & the reason why I am looking for free, legal & legitimate adware, malware and spyware standalone scanners or all-in-one scanners that are compatible for Windows 98SE with updates, if possible:

I want to be nice to the person who might buy the small tower computer or receive for free by providing 'them' with free programs, software and updates so that 'they' do not have to think about it!

So, I thank you for your patience in this matter and I do look forward to receiving your reply soon in the near future - with maybe links or suggestions?

P.S. Please note i have already sent the same message to editor@completelyFREEsoftware.com and harry@webtree.ca 4 times but have not received a reply, yet!

Have also sent a message to qbs-pchelp.co.uk on the 9 of July, and I await for their reply.

P.P.S. Please also note: I am an intermediate, or experienced 60% to 70%, Windows user and I am aware of the vulnerability of etc of Windows 98 SE. Also, my wife & myself have been using the Windows operating system since 3.1 - my wife uses a Windows 7 installed on a notebook & I use Vista Home Premium installed on this laptop, which I am still learning about after using XP for many years - hope that does not 'sound' harsh!

An update.

Hi to everyone who has replied to my posted thread and I apologise for not replying to you all. Also, this is an update: have successfully installed all the free, legal & legitimate fixes, patches and updates, which includes drivers, for Windows 98 SE a
or the second time after having a 'compatibility' problem the first time, and that includes an update from DirectX6 to DirectX 9c after visiting the following websites: hpcfactor.com, mdgx.com and msfn.org! But, I do realise that there might be more free, legal & legitimate drivers, fixes, patches and updates for Windows 98 SE. So I would welcome any links or suggestions!
So, if anyone

But, have not 'finished' the or this 'project' just yet as I am now looking for FREE old 'graphics chip tuning' program for a or the Intel 82810E Graphics And Memory Controller (part of the Intel 810E chipset inbuilt on an Intel Whitney SR Board motherboard) compatible or suitable for Windows 98 SE (forgot to mention in first thread that it's Service Pack 1) similar like or to Riva Tuner to download for FREE from a reputable website, maybe one that provides old programs legitimately! Would welcome any links or suggestions. But please note: although I have not found anything yet after using 3 search engines OldApps do not provide such a program and I have not done a search yet on the Major Geeks website!

Also, I am looking for a FREE unlock and delete file program similar to IOBit Unlocker, but not Unlocker or an earlier version of that program, compatible or suitable for Windows 98 SE SP1 installed on the small tower computer to use myself for now as I have some files and folders to delete - am thinking of including it on a created programs disc to give it to the person that I will be 'giving' the computer to. Again would welcome any links or suggestions. But again please note: although I have not found anything yet after using 3 search engines I do not think OldApps provide such a program and I have not done a search yet on
the Major Geeks website!

That's it for now - cannot think of anything else to add to my update. Also, of course, I might return in the future to 'give' you all a further update. But, anyone who has replied to my thread can think of anythin, as in links or suggestions, then please provide them.

Thanks and all the best to you all for the future.

Your kindness is heartwarming, but it's also a bit blinding. You're badly overthinking this.

Windows 98SE reached the end of its life in 2006 and was functionally obsolete for even longer than that. Meanwhile the hardware itself is 15 years old. We're talking "a cheap cell phone is faster" old.

The only place that system is going is to a recycler, or much less likely a collector looking to put together a system of that era for a specific purpose (e.g. running Win9x games). In either case no one is going to be running the system as-is. Install Windows 98SE and any patches, but don't bend over backwards trying to work on it. It's not worth your time.

Anyone who wants to learn about modern computing should not start further back than Windows XP/ Server 2003 and a good A+ course. As others have stated, there is almost nothing in today's world that learning about Windows 98 would help a person with.

Bhahaha, I love how everyone says crap about 98SE.

Interesting that you are wanting to give someone such a system. I have 3 different systems that are very nostalgic. 2 running Windows 98SE and one running 3.11 For Work Groups. I love the nostalgia of computers.

That being said, there used to be an Unofficial Service Pack 4 floating around for years but alas I am not able to find that.

MajorGeeks.com has an unofficial Service Pack 3.33 currently which is probably the same thing:

Sounds like a very fun project you have going.

Keep us all posted.

when i was using windows 98 se my cpu was the amd athlon xp 2000 with geforce 3 which played everything really well.

win98SE is excellent for running Scummv http://scummvm.org/ and all the old Lucas Arts games such as Day of the Tentacle, Fate of Atlantis, and Monkey Island. There are very many old games that work on the Scummv engine even in win7. I do not know what version will work with Win98se, but I know there was one.

Even though a new phone has more computing power the games of that era still provide a special kind of entertainment.
