I'm looking for a more combat sim experience. TF2 is just too cartoony. I don't want WWII either. Modern combat, ability to actually hide in bushes and stuff, and a solid game with a big online community like TF2.

that'd be one of the upcoming games from dice/ea, BF:BC2 or BF3. there are no recent games on the market that fulfills all those requirements.

borderlands will be coming out next week. 360/ps3 versions are officially out tomorrow, so you could try it on those systems to get a feel for it.

So Battlefield 2 doesn't qualify? The whole series is on Steam now for $30.

Nope. There's no hiding in bushes in this game. It's a huge battlefield of death.

Arma II
Light on the community side, heavy on the modern combat side. Depending on the map, you have a 250 square KM map filled with things that can and will kill you before you even see them. PvP.... god help you.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
A bas.... err I mean consoliszed version of Arma II that will likely have a large community. I hate it myself but you might prefer it.

re: BF2

well even if you're in the bushes, the UAV will pick you out.

every single time i die in that game i notice the enemy UAV circling over me.

i would say BF2, but the game will frustrate the new players that are used to bullets hitting and killing enemies. in BF2 you can pump a mag into someone's backside but he can turn around and kill you in a single burst. and don't get me started on how useless ground vehicles are on maps that have aircraft.

World War 2 online? It's always been criticized for having piss-poor graphics, but it's the most realistic war simulator I've ever seen. There's a new patch coming out with a significant graphics update, rag doll physics, more foliage etc...

http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/

I'm thinking about re-subscribing.

It's a suggestion. If he wants a legit war sim, ww2ol is a great game for the right type. If he wants to compromise, cool. If not, who cares...

I'd rather be sailing...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Crysis/Crysis Warhead.

Not much of an online community, though. (Maybe Warhead.)

Great realistic game for hiding in bushes.
