Need For Speed on Win 2K?

OK, I gave up trying to dual boot my ThinkPad because there are so many device specific drivers and options that setting up Win 98 properly was too much trouble just to run a couple of games that don't play well with Win 2K. I would really like to find a way to get Need For Speed -- Porsche Unleashed to run on Win 2K, however, as the game is possibly the best driving sim I have ever encountered. Officially the game does not support Win 2K, are there any walk arounds that you guys would know of? DX8 is not really and option because my DVD software will not function if DX8 is present, at least it stopped working the last time I tried to install DX8. Thanks in advance for your help.

I know for a fact NFS3 works on Win2k and i would think that 3 would have a much smaller chance of running. Btw, why are there so many corvette drivers with automatics?

Well, in a screaming fit of idiocy, I failed to check the NFS Porsche Unleashed box, which said in the appropriate small print "Windows NT and 2000 not supported.", so to cover up my ignorance I'm trying to find a way to force it to run on Win 2K. I think the Corvette drivers with autoboxes either have bad knees and are physically unable to drive a stick, got the car for free in a contest or something, or they just prefer sheep in wolves' clothing.

I played it on Win2k with no problems.. Of course, this was on a desktop with GeForce 2 MX and no DVD drive and DirectX 7. Have you tried it?

Really!?, I'll have to try it again. The game would start, but then a file called "porsche.icd" would start demanding loads of memory and the page file would grow enormously, then nothing. The system didn't freeze, but it NFS did, and I had to kill it through the task manager.

Zenmervolt: I have the excate same problem. The program demands loads of memory until it pops up with a message telling me that it needs more memory?!?!. Don't know a way around though :(.

you can adjust the size of your virtual memory paging file. start, settings, control panel, system, advanced, performance options, click the change button in the virtual memory section, and increase increase increase!

I just thought of something... isn't an *.ICD file somehow associated with OpenGL? Maybe video card drivers? I'm looking for udated Win 2K drivers for my ATI card right now, I'll let you know if it works.

OK, Tell me this isn't a bunch of BS

RAGE MOBILITY drivers are NOT available for download from ATI Technical Support.

The RAGE MOBILITY drivers supplied with a given laptop or notebook have been specially modified to work in conjunction with the flat panel display and any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer.

As a result of these modifications, ATI Technical Support is unable to make a "generic" RAGE MOBILITY driver available for download.

You MUST use the drivers supplied with your laptop or notebook computer, or obtain a driver update from the manufacturer of your laptop or notebook computer.

Support for a specific driver feature (such as hardware acceleration of OpenGL) may be incorporated into a particular RAGE MOBILITY driver (or not) at the discretion of the laptop or notebook manufacturer. If you have any questions regarding the features or functionality of a particular RAGE MOBILITY driver, please consult with your laptop or notebook manufacturer.

Son of a B-tch.
Well, off to IBM to look for new drivers. I may as well give up.

EDIT: Well, no luck there. C'est la vie. Guess I'll have to build a value gaming rig sooner than I thought. ;)

I'm running NFS 5 on my dell i4000 notebook (600mhz, 14.1 tft, 8x dvd, etc) in win 2k pro. Runs really well at 1024x768.

Thanks for the input, the thing still won't run. I'll just have to wait for another video card driver and/or Win 2K updates that will make it play more nicely with games. That's life sometimes. I get this great laptop with a fancy mobile video chipset and it does me no good. Oh well, I ought to have checked the NFS box better and seen that Win 2K wasn't supported. Guess the family box has to be updated now --- maybe I'll go Duron or T-Bird over the summer :)
