Bought this game for PS2 today, and I think it rocks, definitely lives up to the need for speed title and is steps ahead of what I was expecting. Police chases are awesome, you get some sort of nitrous boost with cop cars in hot pursuit mode that really helps take down the speeders, and you can also have a helicopter fly in and drop a spike strip, or set up a cop barricade to stop people. If you have a powerful car, you do a burnout/tire spin & traction loss spin everytime you accelerate from 0, sort of unrealistic, but very cool and "wow'ing" Similar Gran turismo graphics and gameplay, except faster paced and more crashes/jumps/shortcuts and tracks. Bouncing off the walls is about the same in gran turismo, but there is visual damage, and it looks pretty good! Some weak points are the not so great music and lack of good music, there are only about 10 songs which are repeated hours and hours while playing. I usually don't buy games for two different platforms but if the PC version has multiplayer, it would kick so much ass!

Here is a review with some pics

edit: it is a good month..grand theft auto (4) vice city is supposed to be released at the end of the month!

The car looks a bit blocky on the screenshot. If you like the PS2 version, I'm sure the XBox version kicks butt. I'll have to get that ASAP.

I thought the PC version was going to be released before the end of the year (November?)

Also, last evening, I saw the Need for Speed commercial on network TV. It was awesome! I can't wait for the PC version myself.

Hot Pursuit was a hoot. I beat the thing on one of the modes, maybe both? I don't recall anymore. I guess there's another game to get now (besides UT2K3).

IGN says
The quality of the modeling and lighting on the cars is substantially better than what you'll see in the Xbox and Gamecube versions -- actually, more or less everything is better than the other platform versions, so look forward to a future Head-to-Head feature for all the details.

Where is this review (Link)? I find it hard to believe that the PS2 version of a game is better than the XBox version. GC, I can see that but no XBox. I guess I will have to wait and see ;)

The PS2 version was developed by Black Box Games (who also developed the PC version of NFS: PU/2000), plus had ample time to do the quality work you see.

The GC and Xbox versions were developed by EA Seattle/Canada, but they did not have as much time to develop as BBG did.
