I just got this game, but when I try to load it, it looks like it starts to load, the screen goes blank, and then I'm back at the desktop.
Seems it's a video card problem - when I use the software renderer in the 3d card setup, the game loads, and looks pretty crappy cause of the low resolution. When I set it to Direct3d Device 1, it gives me a warning that the card isn't supported (NFSIII Hot Pursuit gave me a similar error on a Geforce2, but it worked fine). This is on a Radeon 9700 Pro; tried both the 3.1 and 3.2 Catalysts.
I tried using the updater, but after it tries to find anything, it pops up a window that simply says:
D:\Develop\NPS\NPSPatch20\PatchDLL\clientconn.cpp
which is weird because the game isn't installed on the D:, and there's no directory like that there.
I was able to find the v4.50 update at Earacing.com, but that's changed nothing.
Oh yes, it also warns me that I have less than 1MB of hard drive space - I've got three drives on the system, with over 1GB free space on each - 38GB free on my main drive!
Edit: Ok, got it, mostly - I downloaded Spot's D3D Patch from here. With the old 3d engine the game uses, it does quite well on my Radeon 9700 Pro, with high anisotropic, FSAA, and general quality settings.
I also got a No-CD patch for it here.
It still says I have less than 1MB HD space though.
NEW Problem - maybe this is related to the "less than 1MB HD space" error: the game won't save my custom settings. Every change I make to the audio, graphics, controllers, and to the car itself (mainly the transmission type - auto/manual) is reset to default when I exit the game.
I checked the readme.txt file; it "addresses" this issue:
LESS THAN 1 MB HARD DRIVE SPACE
===============================
NFS:HS normally saves certain game setup information to your hard drive.
In addition to this, you can save replays, ghosts, knockouts and
tournaments. If a warning appears when you run NFS:HS stating that you
have less than 1 MB of free space on your hard drive, it means that
there may not be enough room for the game to save this data. You
should try to free up space on your hard drive if you get this warning.
Ok, someone check my math, but isn't 38GB more than 1MB????
