Need for employment vs desire to be a smart*

How many times per day do you have to let your need for a job trump being a smartass?

  • Never, I am the perfect model of an employee

  • Once per day

  • A couple times per day

  • I have the workplace sensitivity training bookmarked

  • I'm a bum

How often do you need to suppress your sarcastic, obnoxious self for the greater goal of keeping your job?

I work in a technical field, most people that I work with don't filter anything. However, it's always joking, no one belittles anyone either.

I'm the same at work as I am here. Cynical and surly; criticizing stupidity wherever, and from whoever it derives, boss included.

In the UK, member of a union, and employed in the public sector.

As long as I don't kill someone too dead I'm ok.

About 15-20.

About 12-18.

On a good day I even out.

I picked: Never, I am the perfect model of an employee.

It's actually accurate, I have a pretty laid back job and don't have to put up with much BS. There's some, but it's rare.

Actually now that I think of it I am sometimes a smartass with people who start demanding a lot from us and are not even calling the right place but insist that we do something. But with my boss, or colleges, never.

Scenario that happened not too long ago: I get this call for a circuit trouble outside of our jurisdiction. It's a weird thing where we take over a certain part of the company at night and that part of the company USED to take care of that jurisdiction so we end up stuck with those calls at time but have zero info on techs that can be dispatched there. So anyway this guy is yelling at me over the phone about a very critical circuit that's down. So I ask him, "is it currently running on the redundant link, or are they actually both down?" Then he tells me there is no redundancy, so I say, "well I guess it can't be that important then". Which is true.. if it's that important then you better have redundancy, just because you have 24h support does not mean a tech will always be available or that he'll be able to figure it out instantly.

I was like this in school, but since getting my current job things...changed. I work with physicians and nurses, so I have too much respect for what they do take out any pent up frustration on them. My coworkers can be pretty stupid sometimes, but we are pretty close knit, our work environment is laid back, and we spend time outside of work together. This makes me feel like trying to help them and doing the best job I can to make their lives easier instead of being sarcastic.

I work in logistics. Not only is sarcasm not suppressed, it has its own set of interpretations.

I overheard the newer hires talk about me (they didnt know i came in through the back). One said to the other, "oh look your training with brainhulk...groan: he has an answer for everything"

Wtf, what the hell is wrong if I have an answer for everything? I'm training you dumb fucks, they should feel fortunate

Or maybe it's my delivery
