Wassup people,
Well.. my employer has decided to move down to Texas from NJ due to a growing financial crisis. The area in Texas is McAllen. I was wondering whether anyone could give me personal feedback on the area? If you've been to the East Coast, how does it compare? How's the area for schooling? I am still going to college, so how well good is the University over there? Anything else I should know?
I've done some research on the web, but I just need some personal feedback on the area.
Thanks in advance.

i've driven through it. its not all that great, but that being said, i believe it has one of the highest job growth rates in the nation right now.

You dont want to end up there......especially from NJ
Its poor, its practically in Mexico.
Maybe if your company runs drugs itll work out.

McAllen, TX *shudder*. I guess they are intent on hiring low wage mexican workers or something.

Thats because of the cheap workforce. More companies are moving there to tap into it.

It pretty much sucks, i live close by but never go there.

If you do move down LMK if u need anything I might be able to help ya out.

Well, I don't have to live there. How far and what is a decent neigborhood from McAllen (maybe an hour or so away), and how much would it typically cost to rent a 1 BedRoom Apt over there?
Any notable college universities nearby?

The closest thing to notable is UT-PA.

Im not racist in the least, but McAllen is 80% hispanic, 15% white.

Median resident age: 30.5 years
Median household income: $33,641
Median house value: $73,900

Yep, know about the demographics.
I'm still wondering on how good UT-PA is. I've been looking at the Top-100 college lists and the only thing it is on is having the most Hispanics. Is there any other university nearby?

Ugh... that really sucks.
I was looking at the real-estate there and man, is it cheap compared to NJ. I was seriously considering the move... but I'm having second thoughts coz of the education.
Thanks for the info, BTW

Dont know how important that job is to you but you would be much better off going to UT-Austin or Texas A&M and then moving back once your donw with school.... not sure how much your employer would like that.

Heh... I would if I could afford it 😉. I have another job lined up in NJ, so it looks like I'll be staying here... but with the way of how expensive things (rent, insurance, tax etc etc) are over here , I am not getting by with too much money and Texas was looking pretty darn attractive.... *sigh*

i've known people from the valley and most of them did not want it known they were from the valley.
