Need Feedback - Gigabyte GA-8IRXP

Hi guys,

I am considering purchasing this mb and a 1.6A (Northwood) P4. Any of you guys, who have the board, care to comment a little on their experiences? I read old posts saying that there are issues with the old bios. How is the board behaving nowadays?

Regards,

Kamui

If you are looking to overclock, you might want to stick with a proven winner like the P4B266-C IMHO. I built a system for a client of mine using the 8IRXP, and so far no problems. However they are not o/c'ing. 🙂

Hi John

thanks for your reply.
I am definitely overclocking this system.
But I was considering the gigabyte board because of the USB2, in board sound, in board network card, and ATA 133. So, I am just wondering if anybody had better luck with this board today.

If you are going to OC this system I would definitely recommend that you NOT get this board. It has a history of boot/reboot problems that have not been addressed satisfactorily by Gigabyte. There has (finally) neen a new BIOS released that is supposed to fix this problem, but most people are still having it. The general consensus seems to be that this board is a very good, full featured board IF you're not going to overclock..

Here's a bunch of threads from Anandtech re: this board. Pay attention to people's opinions of Gigabyte tech support also:

here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,

Here's the latest thread regarding the new BIOS that was released (finally - after at least 7 weeks) to fix the reboot issue. It seems to have helped some people but not others and it still doesn't work at all if you try to go over 1.7 Vcore.

There's also threads about this board over at Hardforums.

Yup, another vote not to buy if you overclock or even if you fancy a 133fsb Northy in your future also 🙁
I had this board and it was fine stock but no 133fsb overclockin whatever chip was slung in 🙁
I would have kept it were it not for the fact the chipset would not do 133fsb so i doubt it will support 133fsb Northys in the future.
Also i found that my 1.4gig TBird performed better on an Asus A7V266E than the GA8IRXP and 1.6A northy, and seeing as i dont overclock the northy has to go.
Asus P4B266 and P4S333 seem to be the overclockers choice at the moment FWIW.

i've had no problem running the chip @133mhz FSB... but i cannot get the voltage over 1.5 volts... i have the 8IRX without the P so i'm not sure if they just disabled that function on my board...... i'm gonna flash the bios tonight and see if thats what unlocks it.
