Wireless is not that big of an issue, but heres the problem.

If I'm torrenting heavily on my PC connected via Wire. My Iphone has difficulties staying connected to the wireless router.

Normal for consumer routers. Torrent activity can overwhelm them pretty quick by the sheer number of connections alone.

I had a hard time finding a router that would handle all my home traffic + torrents.
I decided to build a router out of an old pc.
Running pfsense it handles everything I can throw at it and then some.
And its only a p3-900, 384MB, 20GB hard drive.
I also use the power supply in that pc to power my voip adapter, cable modem, and switch.

So you can afford a SomicWall Pro, http://www.sonicwallsales.com/...ory.aspx?Category=5060

Hehe, You shouldn't assume that just because someone does with the stuff from back of a truck to be broke. We're froogle.

That old computer thing sounds like a good idea. Will I be able to get wireless out of that too? and how about gigabit ethernet.

Links to instuctions PLZ. :)

TIA

http://www.pfsense.org and download the install cd.

I would use a pc with a 500MHz + cpu, 256MB+ ram, 10GB+ HD.
You need to install a minimum of two network cards.
Whatever speed the cards are is what the network will support.
Gigabit, fiber, whatever.
One card will be called the Red card, and the other the Green.
Red is connected to your internet source, cable, dsl, etc and will be filtered and routed by the software.
Green is connected to all the pc on your lan.
If you have more than one pc to connect to the wired lan then you also need a switch.
Connect the green output to the switch and then all the pc on the lan to the switch.

If you want to add wireless you need to add a third card.
That card will be labeled as Orange.
Orange is routed and filtered same as green except it also supports wep,wap/2

Its basically just install the cards and boot the pc with the install cd and follow the prompts.
Once done you can have a routing setup that would cost several hundred/thousand dollars in a dedicated router.

You can later add on things like squid and snort.

http://www.snort.org/

My router currently has an uptime of over 9 months without a single packet dropped because of a router error.

The old PC idea is great if you've got one laying around. And you want more flexibility in network configuration and control.

You might consider Astaro as well. Their security gateway software is free and top-notch.

I got a 2.4ghz P4 OCed to 3.5 laying around,, Gotta LOVE them Nwoods. it has 2 gig OCZ platinum Revision 2 at DDR 600.

Will any of that make it faster?

Which Wired Card should I get.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...&bop=And&Order=REVIEWS

Which wireless cards do i get.

On the website It says I NEED PCI Ex for 200Mbps, But i don't have that on the MObo on my spare, How come it needs that though, when the 2000mbps card is designed for PCI??

Actually, the only thing that would go faster is your money paying the electrical bill of an overclocked P-4 ?Guzzler?.

For your purpose it would work better more stable and would cost less to operate if you

underclock the CPU.

Once you reach a certain point then you are running as fast as the system can . and no amount of cpu power will increase throughput.
One of the major attractions of systems like pfsense is the ability to use older hardware that might not have much of a use anymore.

What the added memory and processing power can give you is the ability to run squid and snort, but even they don't really need that much cpu.

Notice the suggestions are:
10-20 Mbps - No less than 266 MHz CPU
21-50 Mbps - No less than 500 MHz CPU
51-200 Mbps - No less than 1.0 GHz CPU
201-500 Mbps - server class hardware with PCI-X or PCI-e network adapters, or newer desktop hardware with PCI-e network adapters. No less than 2.0 GHz CPU.
501+ Mbps - server class hardware with PCI-X or PCI-e network adapters. No less than 3.0 GHz CPU.

Your fine with a standard pci based nic since I doubt you will be pushing over 200Mbps on a home network.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833127134 -The dlink DGE-530T is supported for wired connections.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833156054 - wireless card is 29.99 after rebate. , also supported.

Just checked out the new house, Closed yesturday. It is much bigger than I thought it was going to be. Carpet Cleaners are charging us 500 for 1600sqft of carpet. Rest of house is tiles and hardwood and concret.

The thing I'm worried about its,, the basement,, Will the setup I'm putting together provide good enough reception to the basement? Or do I need a separate router as an inbetween or something?
