Need exhaust suggestions for a '99 Civic

I've got an exhaust leak on my 99 civic ex coupe, so it's kind of loud right now. Cops tailgate me ALL the time (everything's stock, but it's ricer red with a loud stock exhaust), so I figure it's time to get this fixed.

If the leak can't be fixed and the exhaust needs to be replaced, I figure i'll just install an aftermarket "performance" exhaust. Does anyone know of any good, cheap, and most importantly QUIET exhausts for my car? I plan to use this car for autox so that extra 2hp i gain might help 😛

This has to be a parody... right?

HP gains from exhaust on a Civic?

And someone wanting to "autox" a Civic?

Perhaps you'd be interested in the Integra I posted yesterday...

I'm sure you're right, but the price difference between a stock exhaust and a cheap name brand exhaust would be negligible, right? I have no idea, none of the cars i've owned ever got to the point where it needed a new exhaust so I'm clueless here. If there is a big difference, i'll just end up going stock...

Unfortunately i'm not as rich as you are, I can't afford to buy a Miata or s2000 for something like this. Good for you if you've got the money.

I drive a 11 year old Impreza with ~160K miles.

But I have no delusions as to it being a race car - With or without exhaust mods.

A name brand performance exhaust will run you about $200-400 average, not sure what a standard exhaust would cost. Give Meineke or another local shop a call and get an estimate.

You must be the most retarded person I've come across. Seriously. You're telling me I can't autox because I don't have a "race car"?

Also, you might want to learn how to read. My exhaust may need to be replaced. I figured if I can get a "performance" exhaust, EVEN IF IT IS MARGINALLY BETTER THAN STOCK, for about the same price, why not get something better? You have the logic of a 5 year old.

ok, if you want to spend the money. realise a catback is 400-500 bucks.

look at the greddy SP2 and the Apexi WS2.

these are greddy and apexi's quieter versions of their performance line. Most catbacks will sound pretty damn nice. The sp2 and ws2 will sound close to stock. although you will notice a difference. you just wont get as much drone driving on the highway and such, which is why many people get them. It also usually balances out the loudness an aftermarket header gives.

also it depends where your leak is, you may need another exhaust piece such as the downpipe or even a header. just depends where its leaking i guess.

oh and yes you will get raped by the dealer as usual for replacement. You could look into an exhaust shop doing a custom job for your car and see if it will come out cheaper. that is the only alternative I would consider.

1. buy can of Folgers
2. drink a crapload of coffee
3. put emtpy can on your exhaust
4.???
5. get pointed and laughted at.

A Civic can be an excellent autox car in its class. Lots of people autox them.

HP gains for exhaust would be pointless though, especially if the OP wants a super quiet exhaust. May as well just stick with replacing the stock exhaust and put the money into handling.

I never said you couldn't autocross. If you enjoy it, go for it. I'm all for enjoying the vehicle you have, if I had the time or inclination I might try it in my Impreza.

Common sense says that if autocross is your goal, your money is best spent somewhere other than exhaust.

I guess altogether it seemed like a bit of a parody. I still have a hard time believing that anyone who has ever had their Civic on an autox track would look to exhaust for performance gains.

Went to a mall this evening that just happened to be right next to a Firestone...took my car there and they're telling me I need a new muffler. $293+tax. I think they had the part listed as $220 and the labor as $63.

Anyone know where to get an oem muffler from, on the cheap? Looks simple enough to just do myself..

i would, but you were being an ass, so no.

Midas. Get the cheapest thing they have. It's a Civic. It's an appliance. The cheapest thing Midas has will not be noticeably different from a "Genuine Honda" exhaust.

~$80 for OEM from advance auto.

awesome, there's one a few miles from my place..i'll check them out tomorrow.
thanks

oh, and Pepsi90919: suck it.
You have a welding machine in your garage then? Along with the oxy-acetalene torch to cut the current muffler off? If not, well, the job's a little bit less than "easy"...

look for a custom exhaust shop in your area, and check with them to see how much it would cost for a new muffler plus new exhaust pipe from the cat back. if your going for the performace side, you want a mendrel bend pipe.

I autox in my Civic.. it's actually fun since I'm not going against WRX's or Corvettes or S2000s, etc.. I run in the stock class and against other cars like the Civic.
