im really at a loss, I missed cross country practice yesterday to go to my friends house. If I dont have a valid excuse ill be kicked off the team. Should i just be honest and tell my coach i dont have one, or make something up?

Perhaps you should have thought about that before you skipped to go to your friends house.. hmm.

Yes, as FoBoT said, honesty is always the best policy.

honesty best policy yada yada yada....but maybe you should say you had a group project and had to meet with the team. or had to go to drivers ed and forgot you had practice, or flat tire so had to go fix it at the shop.

honesty will get you booted. the coach will probably admire the honesty... but to be fair to the other team members, will boot you anyway.
it would have to be some kind of emergency. or something you didn't know about in advance. If you know anybody that works in the office, or can go to the office, try to get one of the notes they send to student swhen they get a phone message during class. Then write in something like "mother asks that you pick your uncle up from the airport after school" or something like that.

but then if you want to be real about it, why skip if you want to be on the team?

Tell him you died in a horrible plain crash and couldn't make it to practice, but that you'll make it up tomorrow.

If youre a super star runner, the coach wont throw you off the team, he needs you, so tell the truth.

If youre not the best on your team, lie. Forge a doctors note. Dont be silly and get kicked off.
