Looking for anyone that can point me to a fast CD-Ripping DVD burner for my HTPC. I bought an NEC at Newegg, but it turned out to be a rebadged Optiarc (sony?) and only rips CD's at 6-7x. I have another real NEC that rips at 20x and higher, but it came in a PC so I don't know which model to buy to duplicate its performance.

So, can anyone recommend a drive? Black is required.

I have 2 sony DVD burners in my system. DVR-510A and DVR-800A. The 510 rips cds at max 10x, the 800 rips at 29x or higher sometime. These 2 drives are OLD by todays standards. I had the 510 at least 4 years and the 800 at least 2 years. So I really dont know what is good right now but your newer model burner should yield better result than my antiquated stuff.

If you like your older NEC, why not just get the model # off of it and try to find another one?

Well, in essence I did try that. I ordered the only Black NEC DVD Burner that NewEgg carries.

Problem is, technology changes and OEM stuff could be anything.

Aopen 1648 AAP/PRO.

Remember that most are rip locked so you will need to upgrade your firmware to unlock this and get those speeds up!
