I've been using the 6.2.5 DIVX drivers for a few months now with no problems. However, yesterday my computer started crashing whenever I opened a folder with video files in it and clicked on a file. I got the Data Execution Prevention warning then Windows Explorer crashes. I did a complete spyware/adware/virus scan with multiple programs and found nothing. I turned off DEP for windows explorer, but I still go the crashes, just with a different error msg. Anyway, I did some research and found it that iw as probably my DIVX drivers so I unistalled those and now I don't get the crash; however, I can't watch most of my video files. I tried reinstalling DIVX and the crash came back.

My question is now, is there a 3rd party driver that would let me watch DIVX encoded video?

Another option is to DL and use vlc media player. It plays everything without having to worry about installing codecs.

2nd ffdshow....but how long has it been since it was updated.

Has it been that long? ;)

Actually, you could prolly get a new build almost daily if you wanted as it is in constant development and several folks release their own builds in different flavours. I usually just grab an SSE version from free-codecs every month or so. The cutting edge ones can be had from ffshow.da.cx if that sort of thing tickles yer fancy.

i completely forgot about VLC player, I actually already have that. I just tried it and it does work, but I don't like using VLC and I like to have to option of showing thumbnail view in Windows explorer which will need drivers to do. I usually use MPC, but MPC doesn't work w/out drivers. I guess I will download ffdshow and see it goes.

thanks for the suggestions, guys.

whoa. this may be the cause of your crashes right there.
if you want to troubleshoot, disable thumbnail view for that folder, reinstall whatever troublesome divx you had before and then go to the folder.

I did troubleshoot, when I first got the problem, it wasn't even in thumbnail view. And the problem came up regardless of the folder or its settings as long as it had a video file.
I uninstall DIVX and restarted my pc, the problem went away, but I couldnt view any of the videos. Then I redownloaded DIVX from their website reinstalled and restarted. The problem came back. None of that matters now though, since everything seems to be working fine ffdshow.

Uninstall all your codecs that you might have.

Install the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) (comes with ffdshow)

Enjoy :)

6.3.1 is the DIVX player, which I didn't have installed in the first place. I had the 6.2.5 divx codec which is the most recent.

Ah, so. I just saw a blurb in passing on warp2search or somewhere.

Codec packs are teh Devil's work! Really, ya don't need much besides MPC and ffdshow... maybe QT Alternative and Real Alternative (although that's stretching it).

Really codec packs are a blessing.
A one stop shop.
With CCCP I get ffdshow, MPC, Zoomplayer, and a whole bunch of codecs garenteed to work together.

What more could you ask for.
