Need Disk recovery options FAST

Hi. At work, we've had a virus (still unknown) wipe the partition table on two hard drives in two days. The first, we formatted and are reinstalling the system. The second has important data we need to get off the drive. When we boot, there's an "insert system disk" message (no, there's no floppy or CD in the drive), and the HD has a media failure notice. Note that the drive is still recognized, and spins up and everything. Is there any way to access this data? I can't even see the drive. Aside from having a pro get it off magnetically for $500+ what can I do? This is fairly urgent.

Call in a pro....you could try to recreate the MBR, but you may do even more damage, and guarantee you won't be able to retrieve the data.

Have you thought about your new backup strategy? 😉 <gentle nudge, as I've lost data too>

We took it to a pro. My backup strategy is fine. I've only been here about 2 weeks, and my superior hasn't backed up in over a year. Oops. My backups at home are frequent.

Figures! BTW, I'm sure you meant to post: ...and the person I report to hasn't backed up...😉

These are the same folks who ignore our company policy that all important files are to be stored on a *production* server, so it can be backed up.
