NEED DISK RECOVERY HELP

So I decided I wanted to install Gentoo Linux. Everything goes good, I get to the partitioner. As I already have a Linux parition (I dual boot with Ubuntu) I instructed it to reformat the linux partition. However, it threw an install error, and now it looks like my partition table is fvucked (the partition that contained my personal documents and my windows installation is now one huge "unknown" partition). I'm pretty sure the data is still intact (the installer wasn't active long enough to do much to the disk) I've been screweing with the Ultimate Boot CD, but FreeDos doesn't boot correctly on my comp for some odd reason (Invalid Opcode after InitDisk). I have a backup, but it's old and there's vital data that I need to recover university based stuff).

Is there any tool that could recover my data? I have an external USB 2.0 HD that could easily hold my entire HD.

Use a Knoppix or Suse Live CD

Done that. Knoppix boots (have to disable pcmcia and udev to prevent freezeup) but doesn't recognize my partitions. When I attempt to access my data, it simply states that the drive could not be mounted.

getdataback from runtime.org, lets you see what it can recover before you have to purchase it.
I bought it and its payed for itself several times helping recover files for customers.
