I what to be able to get FPS scores on Quake, Half-life, Thief 2 etc How do you do this? I just put my machine together and I want to know how much it can do.

Thanks!!

You want to get FPS scores of YOUR machine, or FPS scores in those game? For Quake, there's a built-in function for that... and as Half-Life is based on the Quake engine (Q2 specifically), there should be a function like that somewhere (but I don't know what it is... Sorry). As for Thief 2, I don't really know which engine is based upon. Maybe Q2 too?

Anyway, if you want to compare those FPS with friends, you should record a little demo with the functions (RTFM to know what are those functions 😀) and then exchange those demos to see if you're better or worse.

Half-Life benching is broken, and even when it worked it kinda svcked. No idea on Thief2 one way or the other.

For Quake based games you have to go to the console and type some commands.

To bring down the console hit the ~ key, then type-

timedemo 1

For all the Quake games and then hit enter. For Quake2 enter-

map demo1.dm2

And hit enter and it will run through a benchmark. To see your results after it is done hit the ~ key again. For Quake3 after you enter the Timedemo 1 command you can hit the ~ key again closing the console and then simply select one of the demos to run from the regular game menu. After the demo is done running through hit the ~ key yet again and it will give you your average FPS.

113.4 at what settings?

If that is 640x480 lowest texture details all options off that isn't too great. If that is 1600x1200 32bit everything cranked then that kicks major @ss🙂

can anyone suggest newer games that have a benchmarking facility? even in demos. don't really want to buy the damn things just to see how they do.

1024 x 768 is 109.5 fps for Quake 3
1024 x 768 is 95.6 fps for Unreal Tournament

Edit: Both are 16 bit I believe.
