I have a machine with a slot 1 mobo. It is a Asus P3B-f rev 1.03.

Asus says that the machine will support up to 850 mhz.

Is this because it is no longer current and they are not updating documentation or the fact it really will not? I would like to drop a 1 gig cpu into it.

Any thoughts or personal experience?

Thanks,

RIch

As long as you have the latest BIOS, you can put in a 1GHz Pentium III on the P3B-F with no problems; even the coming 1.1GHz cD0 stepping....

The P3B-F is not subject to the VCore voltage problems like the P2B family.

The latest BIOSes are Version 1006 Final and Version 1008 Beta 002.

I highly recommend that you use version 1008 Beta 002 as this has full support for the cC0 and cD0 stepping Coppermine Pentium IIIs.

You do need to be careful when you make that upgrade purchase because it is only set up for a 100 MHz FSB so I would suggest that you stick to processors designed for 100 MHz FSB. There are Coppermines out there at 1 GHz with 100 MHz FSB but they aren't as common as the 133 MHz FSB. Just letting you know.

The P3B-F will quite happily take 133MHz FSB processors in most cases. You just have to note that since there is no 1/2 AGP multiplier, your AGP will be running out of spec at 89MHz. If you have a recent video card such as one of the GeForce family from nVidia, you should have no problem.

You cant go wrong with Andy's advise. I am running a P3 1Ghz 133Mhz FSB on my Asus P2B, which is like father to your motherboard mostly thanks to Andy. So go for it.
