Need Digital Camera help/ Post your picks and favorties

I am looking at getting a new digital camera. Looking for something that can be point and shoot or something that when i get to that point that can be used manually.

Looking for 2.5 megapixel or more

zoom is important.

Quick picture taking

ability to add on lenses and filters



I have looked at all the review places like imaging resource, steves and dpreview, just looking for personal preferences.

Right now im looking at spending around 800-900 dollars on a package.

so far my pick is Canon PowerShot Pro90 IS , i was wondering if anyone had any expieriences with this?

My father recently purchased a Canon Powershot A20. It looks to be an excellent camera. Canon is a lens manufacturer in the world of standard photography, this is always good. You need a good lens to take a good picture. Just make sure you get a name like Nikon, Canon, or Olympus. They all make lenses.

My first digicam was a Canon S10. You can see pics I took with that at my web site.

I got a Canon G2 for Christmas and am still learning how to use it. It's a "prosumer" camera that has lots of manual functions. If you'd like to see some professional Canon G1 and D30 pictures, check out Pekka's work. If you don't need the zoom capabilities of the Pro90IS, I'd go for the G2 instead.

One things to pay attention to are your needs out of a digital camera. Do you need a good zoom? Do you plan on printing photos you take? Do you do any image editing? These kinds of questions will help you in your search. If you need a good zoom, eliminate all cameras that can't zoom far enough for you (Don't pay attention to digital zoom, that is like zoomin in Adobe Photoshop. Standard zoom gets closer with the same level of detail retained). If you want to print photos, you should match the number of MPixel to the number of pixels your printer is capable of outputting. The highest I've seen around ar 2400x1200. This equates to 2.88MPixels. This would mean that anything above that is a waste of money for the extra clarity. If your printer can't even go that far, then either get a new printer or buy a cheaper camera. Also, image editing always welcome a lot of clarity. If you do image editing, you will appreciate the ability to zoom in further before sharpness is lost. Good luck camera shopping.

For $800-900 you can get a very good digital camera... probably not enough for a digital SLR. But for that much, you'll be looking at something like the Nikon Coolpix 5000 which has 5.0 megapixels and 3x optical zoom(ignore digital zoom). But for a little more than half that money, you can still get a pretty nice Coolpix 885 that has 3.2 megapixels.

i have an hp photosmart 1215

my current a20 works fine and prints good, just looking for something a little differn't since i have the cash, i am going to be getting into digital photography a litte more.

zoom is important to me, i want a decent amount of megapixel, i think 2.5 and u pwould be good, i dont use photo editing programs as much but may in the near future. Main reason to have this is to take pictures and print them. I could do without the zoom, i am just stuck, so many cameras and reviews and so many that do the same thing, i guess i am just looking for something that takes excellent indoor and outdoor shots, can be printing up to 8x10 max, under 900 dollars, uses CF, as a decent optical/digital zoom.
just trying to get some other insight.

looks like i am going to stay around 825 or so with shipping, i found a site that has a canon powershot pro 90 is package with weather proof case, 64 meg cf card, lens cleaning kit, warranty, and the camera for about 810 shipped which is a decent deal.
