Is there such a thing? A friend wants me to find something that he can hook up to a laptop to convert VHS tapes to DVD and also lets you record TV programs to DVD (and record one thing while watching another?)

Pointers appreciated!

This is what you want Text but I don't know if it is the best price/performer in the catagory so hopefully others will be able to provide the brands and models that do.

I believe Hauppauge also has a USB video capture/tuner device. I haven't used it, but reviews say it works. I think ATI has one as well. These things are relatively new, so you might want to dig around for reviews or check an A/V site like www.avsforum.com or www.hometheaterspot.com.

Recording one thing while watching another (well, watching another *live* program, anyway; you can obviously watch recorded video files simultaneously) requires dual tuners. I don't know of any USB dual-tuner devices, although theoretically you should be able to hook up two of these things simultaneously (assuming the software supports it).

find a tv capture card with s-video in, get the vhs rca audio out and get a Phono-to-3.5mm jack stereo adapter from radioshack and plug it into your line-in on sound card. Get virtualdub or whatever capturing program, and start recording. Make sure you record audio from line-in sound card, and then burn.

Have you considered a set top DVD recorder/VHS combo? You can record directly to it or VHS to DVD. Available around $300 from your favorite retailer.
