Need "desperate help" with DFS please, tried it several times and no workie :(

Here's what I did....

On the 1st server, I have 4 shares. One's called DFSROOT (hosts for the DFS ROOT), Apps, Games, and Docs. In each of the Apps, Docs, and Games I've created a miscellaneous text file.

Now I go and create a domain-based DFS, using DFSROOT as the root. None of the Apps, Games, and Docs shares are subdirectories of DFSROOT.

Now in the DFS I create 3 links, each of the links to MY 3 shares.

On the 2nd server, I also create 3 shares, named Apps2, Games2, and Docs2.

Now going back to the 1st server, for each DFS link (Apps, Games, Docs) I create a new replica, linking to their directory counterparts on the 2nd server.

So far, is that correct? When there's more than 1 link created, DFS will prompt me to configure replication, which I did enable and set the one on the 1st server as the primary.

So that's done. So then I wait half an hour, nothing replicates onto the 2nd server. Thinking its a group policy thing, I go into the group policy setting and reduce the time between policy replication to 1 minute. Still, nodda 🙁

So what exactly am I doing wrong that the information on the 1st server can't get to the shares on the 2nd server? I'm really confused. Something seemingly this simple can be so hard to get right, aargh, I'm a bit frustrated with this whole DFS thing.

If possible, please provide me with ALL the steps on how to setup and configure DFS on two computers.

Thx.

Plucky, welcome to the world of DFS... Never worked right even when it worked...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... At Mitre Corporation (I am a UNIX Admin there) we use AFS (Andrew File System) with KErberos Authentication...

Works great over WAN links and the internet... very secure also... Works great over unix and windows with UNIX servers and *nix and windows clients...

You can check it out at openafs.org and the retail version is available from IBM...

Doh! Really? That's crap-shoot. It worked only once from a lab way back when, even then it took days for the replication to take place, sheesh. Yeah, its very frustrating when you follow, what appears to be simple steps/procedures and it still doesn't wanna play nice with you (anybody got a hammer? 😛)

Hmmm...the software that you're recommending there, is that a Unix-only solution? Or can I apply that 3rd party package onto W2K Server and use it for my W2K client computers?? Interesting, thx for the linky 🙂
