Hey everyone. I'm in the final stages of putting together my first custom built pc to replace my ancient piece of $hit hp pavillion a1030n. So far i have:
Antec 900
P965 DS3 3.3
CPU (still deciding)
2x1 gb OCZ Reaper ram DDR2 808
evga 8800 gts 360mb
samsung spinpoint t 500gb sata
2xdvd write drives
(waiting for my cnps 9500 to come)
ocz 600w psu

I've been waiting on the July 22nd price cuts, but also doing some research. The e6420 was my choice before seeing as i was going to attempt to overclock it to a stable 3.2 ghz. But now that the price cuts are rolling around i was thinking about getting an e6750. It looks like a really good chip, especially with the new G0 stepping. What i was wondering though, does it make sense to buy the e6750? or maybe OC the e6400 instead? I want to keep this rig for a while 'til maybe 3-4 tech generations, until i find it hard running games very well on my rig. But could anyone help me decide? e6750 or e4400. Which will OC better? is the e6750 really the better buy? And feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to keep this new system for several years, go for the q6600 ($273 at mwave retail boxed). And I wouldn't overclock the quad core unless you want to use water cooling.

yeah but its really expensive... i like that i wouldn't be spending any more than if i got a e6420 with the e6750, but how much better are the quad cores going to be? i plan to do extensive gaming mostly with all the settings maxed out at a 1280*1024 res unless i get a new monitor with a 8800gts and 2 gig ram. how much better will the quad core be for gaming? i dont do any editing nor will i start so its unimportant to me. and im not a huge multitasker. I just want something thats really good for games. plus i hear most games arent even going to get close to using all FOUR cores of a cpu. theyve barely started with two now.
