Need some advice on getting a new router. I mainly use my comps for surfing, DL and some BT.which should i get ?

I i just need a decent stable router that works and not some high end like Dl-655 or those new N-routers. I dont game online much or use voip so QoS types or gamefuel types router are uncessary. No exotic cisco types as well.

Narrowed it down to these few wrt-54g non-flashable, Dl-524,624, netgear NR824 something...i think. Any recomendations?

Since you need no frills, go get whatever is the cheapest or has the best rebate. ALl routers these days work fine for basic browsing and networking. Could look for the TrendNet that CompUsa always has rebate son. Its under like $10 most times.

its for cable connection :robmurphy

Unfortunately, i live in a small town with only a limited hardware store and it doesnt carry any buffalo or ALI stuff. The few decent products i found are mentioned above
If i had to pick from those which would it be?... I did my own research and found that most product review for those brands like linksys and dlink vary greatly on sites like newegg.
which isnt much of a help, plus i dont really trust online reviews... some give it 1/10 others give 8-9/10..for the same model so what gives ?

My old router was non wireless..so wireless features are not really important...since i dont really use it but good to have since the cost for having wireless types a/b/g/n are the same...likewise for additional features like QoS, support for VPN etc. SPI maybe good though, ease of use to configure but it must be able to handle large connections since i use BT quite offten these days. Any inputs ?

It probably be more constructive if you would post a list of what is available in your small town.

yea unfortunately as mentioned in my 1st post of the thread, i've checked with the vendor... those wrt's sold here are with the new firmware ver >6 cannot be flashed. guess linksys wants to make more $$ by re-branding those flashable 54g routers that run linux as WRT-54GL which the store does not carry...i guess i'm outta luck there. But thanks anyway

To be honest it sounds like you need the router you already have. What are the problems with it?

If it handles large BT sessions well stick with it. The lower end routers are going to strugle with the large number of connections that a heavy P2P session will use. I use the Netgear WGT624 and it seems to handle the P2P OK. My experience of it using wireless is not so good. That could be the laptop, or the fact that there are many wireless networks close to me so the spectrum is over crowded.

I have killed a fair number of Linksys routers just by touching them (my office is very dry during the winter so I can build up a large static charge) but have not killed any Dlink routers ;)
