I will be changing the case fan out of my computer with another panaflo l1a (undervolted 5v), thinking i will try to put a smart drive enclosure on the hdd and some acoustipack padding in the case. Another thing I was thinking was either switching the fan out of the ps that came with the case or buying a seasonic super tornado 300w. thanks for all your help - my main concern is mainly noise - 🙂

1) There's no way in hell a 5v Panaflo is going to cool an A64 - and what are you doing not using a 92mm fan on a 92mm HSF?

2) Don't use an enclosure - just suspend the drive. A Seagate will BBQ itself inside an enclosure and makes barely any noise as it is. Suspension and ambient airflow over it will be fine.

3) Have buttloads of airflow. If I were you, I'd look into a case that uses exclusively 120mm fans for ventilation. The AMS G-Mono series is good for that - then add a 120mm-holding PSU and presto.

Oh, and what type of video card are you planning to have with this? 😉

What video card and what cooling on it?

L1As @ 5v move VERY little air. I might be concerned with having one on your heatsink and one as exhuast.

A fanless PS is not a good idea in a very low air flow system like the one you have lined up.

The antec 3700 BQE is a very good quiet case, and there are acoustipacks made for it, I believe. I have the Acousticase 6607, straight from Acoustiproducts. It's basically a modified 3700 BQE w/ acoustpack, improved airflow, etc.

The AMD 64 is a good idea, as is the heatsink you have picked out. I would recommend a 92mm Acoustifan for it. It's being hailed at SPCR as the best 92mm fan to date.

Smart drives really aren't necessary. Most good cases come with rubber grommets that do just about as good a job. Or if you really want to do a good job, use sorbothane and sit your drives on it.

cool thx for all the advice - hmm i am planning ongetting the 9800 pro ultimate by sapphire the fanless one - so i need to work on airflow - hmm the case allows for 120mm fans i might look into the acousti fans - i was going to try to use the panaflos at regular 12 volt and watch temperatures as i undervolt - pending on heat i will probably add the intake fan as well

thx for all the good points

I dare say I've become this board's silencing nut. Of course, there are worse than me at SPCR.

I have some 120mm Acoustifans that are very nice, no ticking or clicking, which has been reported by some. The kicker is, they cost $30. BUT, it has recently came to light that the Globe 120mm fans that sell for around $7 are in fact the same fans, except black. THey have all the same great quiet properties.

How does the case allow for 120mm fans and 80mm fans?

And a 92mm Acoustifan is definitely THE way to go for that heatsink. Don't even consider the Panaflo, it will be blown away in quietness and performance.

The Zalman Reserator is a great solution for a super quiet PC. I plan on moving to one. I'd get one if I were you, and had the money to spend.

hehe i was looking at that - but not that much money yet - maybe in the next year or so - thx for all the help - will keep you guys updated on what i do

Western Digitals are the only modern drives that aren't quiet enough for a silent system.

Is that Thermalright HS better than the Zalman 7000A for a silent Athlon 64? The Zalman certainly looks impressive.

I can't believe you linked to that case! Read the comments! The guy specifically says that the power supply is very loud.

Get a nice case w/o a PS and then get an Enermax Noisetaker.

This is a pretty nice case that is the same price:

Looks good.

The Samsung spinpoints are the quietest drives available since they no longer make the Cuda 4's. Even so they all make too much noise still. which is why I have 3 of these: http://www.siliconacoustics.com/smartdrive2002enclosure.html

Your case is good because it allows fitment of a 120mm fan which can then be 5 volted. I recommened the cheapest 120mm fan newegg sells, it's made by Yate Loon, as all these so called quiet fans are.

I recommend getting a 92mm fan for your HS alows more static presure, lower speeds and better cooling than a 80mm. Here is the best bet.

For PSU I have no recommendation. No PSU has the power I like and is quiet. I've been though about six PSU's RMA of so called silent PSU's and finally just modded an enermax 465 to take the 120mm fan above using a thermistor now it's silent.

I don't see a video card on there but the Sapphire "ultimate editon" 9800pro is silent becasue it's passive, I have for sale used (pm me if interested) but it's $239 at newegg.com.

Anyway good luck on your quest. I finally moved to a water cooled setup, a dual passive innovatek radiator system on my main rig because nothing is silent at high speeds no matter how hard I tried or the money I spent. Now my system only has one fan, the PSU I eluded to earlier, and it's silent at 3am in the dead of night.

I'd recommend getting an Antec 3700 over a Sonata, it's a quieter, better designed case. Or even the new 2650, it's nice and compact.

For a power supply, if silence is really what you're after, go for a fanless power supply, by Cool Max or SilenX. Be prepared to pay $200 for a 400w fanless power supply though.

When I make the move to my Zalman reserator, I plan on getting a fanless PSU as well, and running a totally fanless system. The hard drives can freakin bake for all I care. I'll actually be silent.

I wish you best of luck however, In my observations, I've found one MUST have some, even if just a little, air passing though the system otherwise mosfets and caps will get so hot leading to instabilty and eventually failure. Also these so called fanless PSU rely on air being passed though the case to cool them. This is why they all have fins for more surface area to interact wth moving air. So thier not really fanless, not to mention thier high cost and low power making them less than desiable IMO. One way to get around this is with an extremly large Aluminum case for better convection and more air in the case. However the best way is PSU fan which also acts to pull air though the case using the case as the shrowd.

The PSUs I have in mind have large heatsinks protruding from the back of the case. I actually recently was informed of a water cooled PSU that seems like it might work great w/ a Reserator.

Won't the "9800 pro ultimate" be a problem? What will this system be used for? More power = more heat for the case fan and psu to cope with. Apparently the 9600 is a very cool card.
