I need some help lowering my CPU/VC temps. I have a P4 2.8A ghz and I just bought a zalman 7000 w/ arctic 5 silver to help.

My current cpu temp is about 55-65c ~ 120-140F. What can i do to lower it to about 30-40c. My vc is a 9800pro and its right next to the cpu hsf. I heard psu could also cause high temps. MY PSU is a generic(turbolink 350w) never heard of it, came with aspire xdreamer II case. Is this good enough?

Buy a good quality PSU first of all, Is your HSF seated correctly and did you apply the AS5 per the instructions? I have the very same HSF on a 2.4 P4 and the idle temp is 37c ,load is 43c. I would start with the HSF and recheck the AS5 and then make sure it is seated before I did anything else.

Look into improving general airflow in your case. Intake/exhaust fans. Air Conditioning in your computer room will also help a lot. ;)

The 2.8A is a Prescott so naturally temperatures are higher. Is that temp idle or under load?

If you already have a 7000 and AS5 I would consider improving airflow (as stated above). More fans and maybe a better PSU with a large intake fan.

I looked up your case and it has some good locations for fan placement. Enlarge the blowhole on top to 120mm- Remove the stamped grills on the front intake and rear exhaust fans- Think about enlarging the side intake to either a 92mm or 120mm. The side intake appears to be directly over the CPU so there may be a clearance issue with a larger fan. Make sure that the cables and wires inside the case are not blocking the air flow.

thanks for the suggestions. the mobo side of the case is getting hot now, I can feel the heat. Should I drill a hole and put a fan on the backside?

one more thing what is a sysfan? is that on the motherboard or the back of the case near the ps.
there is a fan controller pin slot on the motherboard for this sysfan. what is that?

That is a pin header for a fan be it a CPU fan or a case fan. If your CPU is producing excessive heat you will feel there also. Reseat your HSF and be sure to apply a translucent layer of AS5 and get a quality PSU. Find someone to cut the holes for the fans in your case or read up on it and do it your self. If you do that your prob will more than likley be solved

*Update i just installed another fan near the motherboard and now im have just taken out my stock hsf and cleaned the p4 chip. There was a lot of gray thermal stuff that melted on the cpu. I just cleaned it but i still see see the thermal stuff except now its on the chip like a hard waterspot. I cant get that stuff out. But the surface is clean is this good enough?

I just tried again and I cant get it off, it theres still the imprint of the old thermal stuff. How can i get this stuff off? Can i just put as5 on it now?
