I'm thinking of replacing my stock CPU cooler (the one that came in the box with my CPU) for my intel P4 Socket 478 Prescott processor to try and cool it down a bit. My current temperatures reach anywhere from 45 to 60 degrees Celsius. I think that is way too hot so I went to NewEgg (i love this place) and was thinking of going with the Thermaltake brand and found these two:

1. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106606

2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106032

Which one should I get? The 2nd one has this little control knob that you can install to the front of your computer so you can make the fan go as fast or as slow as you want. I think that is pretty neat.

Also what kind of thermal paste would you guys recommend?

Thanks,

JJ

I would recommend going with the XP-90 paired with a good 92mm fan. I good second choice would be the Zalman 7000ALcu. For thermal paste go with artic silver 5.

Concur on the XP90. That's the best option.

The Zalman CNPS7000 is almost borderline for the PresHott-- If you use that, you will have to run the fan at full-speed.

I have a 3.2P4E@3.4 with a Zalman 7000AlCu and AS5.
I get 36C idle and 48c load.

However, I have a 92 Panaflo in a side thermal vent blowing right at the heatsink.
If you are going with the P4, consider using a side vent with a good high-quality fan.
