Ok, my ipod earbuds are useless in the gym. I have to turn it up so high to drown out the ambient thrash metal music that it hurts my ears. Can someone reccomend a heaphone that is somewhat comfortable to work out in but that will also drown out the ambient music. It can be noise canceling or non. Over the ears is fine also.

Thanks..

I wish my gym played Heavy Metal Music instead of Vag Spears, Justaqueer Timberlake, Diareeha Carey and the rest of that estrogen producing top 40 crap.

Goosemaster, it looks like I will go with the Sure E2C's. Good time to use the $15 paypal coupon.

generally, comfortable headphones are not suitable for gym because they trap too much heat on your head. Beyer Dynamic DT-990 offer good sound quality and are very comfortable (in my opinion) but are definately not suitable for gym - especially if you try carrying around a headphone amp to enable the "drowning out" of the crap gym music. :D

IEMs are probably the best to isolate your ear drums from the gym music. They typically can lower the surrounding noise by an average of 27db. Unfortunately, I have found IEM to not be very comfortable for running etc because everytime my feet impact the floor, i get microphonics through the IEM.

Right now, I am using a 40$ pair of Koss PortaPro. They offer a nice bass "hump" in the ca. 80hz range that puts more "kick" into your favorite gym songs -- a place where you dont really care about overall musical accuracy. The Koss PortaPro is pretty lightweight and are decently comfortable.

I have owned both the shure e2cs and the etymotics er6i. The shure's seem to have better bass while the er6s are slightly more accurate.

As for comfort once i got the ultraflex sleeves that they come with now i was pleased in the shures. The tri flange design of the er6s are pretty comfortable once used a few times.

I use Shure E3c. They are buds that go into your ear canal. You compact the foam and insert into your ear. It then expands to a snug fit that's extremely comfortable and is not prone to falling out like the ipod ones.

The sound quality is really good, and you can't hear anything going on outside even though they aren't noise cancelling. It's also great for commuting on the train. Saves battery power because you don't have to turn the volume as high as the normal iPod buds to listen.

I have Shure e2c's, but find them impractical for gym use. The earphones themselves are somewhat prone to falling out (this may be a function of the size and shape of my ear canal), and the combination of the very heavy-gauge cable with the fact that it is routed over the ears makes them kind of unwieldy. I am really enjoying my V-Moda Bass Frequency in-earbuds, which provide good sound isolation and excellent sound without the downsides of the Shures. I still use the Shures on planes, but the V-Modas are my main earbuds.

I like my JVC FX-33's, better known as the Marshmellows. Only $25 CAD, and they have similar isolation levels to the HD-280's. And they are IEM's ;)

I lol'd at Justaqueer but found the rest lacking.
