I just need a place to park about 5 email accounts for between me and somebody else, and maybe a total of 200 megs of space, a few gigs of transfer tops, because i'll be using the account for email traffic only, and maybe a pic host if i have nowhere else...IMAP required!

20 bucks a year is my limit =\
any ideas?

Haven't been here long enough to know RossMAN is the leading provider around here? :D

From what I've heard they are pretty unreliable, and my email is pretty important....all the other reliable providers have a minimum plan of like 30 gigs a month, and that's wayyyyyyyy overkill for me.

Their reliability has surprised me but I have a good suggestion for you.

1) Can you afford $30/yr for 250MB/5GB?

2) Can you live without CGI/Perl support?

1. no, not really
2. yes. dont need cgi, perl, mysql, blahblahblah, i'll be happy if i can ftp a jpg file and have somebody else download it. that's about it in terms of web transfer, everything else is just email. ;)

Good question.

RippleHost doesn't officially support IMAP but it does work.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Cheap ass = Cheap ass host

If I want to snag a domain to go along with this, how would i do it? Which do i register first, etc, etc? If my host dies in 2 years, and my domain is registered for say, 3 years, is it easy to switch over to a new host with minimal email downtime?
I've never done this, and I think I'm going to sign up for the $18/year deal RossMAN posted if IMAP is in there somewhere. ;)

EDIT: from the features list:
POP3 + IMAP
sweeeeeeeeet

Gary Harris of world famous Dixiesys.com is online right now and I posted questions for him here, hopefully he'll respond soon.

Here's what you do in order, step by step:
1) Find a domain to register, here are some excellent resources to find recently and upcoming expired domains

DomainDuck.com

HTTPme.COM (click Fix of the Day threads)

Pool.com

Snaganame.com

2) Go to NameCheap.com and register a domain (or several) for $8.88/yr for each domain.

3) Sign up for your web hosting.

4) Wait for your "welcome" e-mail from your web host which has your name servers. Go to your domain registrar's web site (NameCheap, GoDaddy, etc.) login, update your DNS name servers to what's listed in your "welcome" e-mail.

5) Go ahead and upload your files to your web site via the IP address, wait for 24 hours for propogation then your web site and e-mail is ALIVE!

I don't think these two hosts will fit in your price range, but I used them for my website back when it was up:

addr.com
jaguarpc.com

My site wasn't ever found to be down at all. I don't know how the more budget accounts are, but the high end ones have zero problems.

I use these 2: Geesh.net and HostingNova.com is 2 hosts who I've never had problems with for the past 4 months or so...

I found about them from the same forum as Rossman uses (webhostingtalk.com)

Geesh is more expensive then HostingNova so you might want to go. I've never heard of them and took a chance, and they worked out fine for me. I would suggest going with HostingNova for the email stuff. I still use them now. There's not much more I can tell you, but you can PM me for more questions if you need me.
