I've got all the parts for my brothers new computer but I can't find an 8800GT anywhere. I have an order placed with DELL and with Buy.com neither of which will probably ship before Jan. I just need a place holder card to slap in the rig to get it up and running. Max rez of his monitor is 1280x1024. The only 2 games he plays atm are a 2-d rpg and a little WOW.

Any recommendations for <$40?

Not sure if you want to cancel that order, but...

The 7200GS is a bit slower then the 7300GS listed at the bottom of Tom's vid card chart. Though not 100% accurate, it gives a general idea where this card ranks and 'rank' is the operative word.

Now, this card would be a good deal within a similar price range, however, on newegg it is not currently in stock. Look around and you'd probably find a similar deal.

Well right now he's playing wow on a laptop with a mobile version of the Radeon VE(7000 ve) chip so it can't be worse than that. :D He's only gonna use it for a month or so and then we'll toss it into the scrap pile.

I'm thinking about building a htpc and that x1650 looks like it would work though.

cant he live without WoW for a couple of weeks? save the money towards Rehab...

(a former addict myself. i found out that the best way to stop the addiction is not to play for about 2-3 weeks. then when you get back to it it doesnt feel the same and gets annoying/boring)

You should just add the $40 to the street cost of the GT (around $300) and just get the new 512MB 8800GTS.

Or he can wait until the the 256 8800GT is readily in stock and drops into the $170 range towards the end of January.

Not that it matters now but the Buy.com 8800GT shipped the same day I ordered it but I wasn't updated till the next morning after I had bought the temp card. The new computer was up and running with the 8800 before the temp card even got here. I didn't find out in time to cancel so now I need to send it back to newegg.
